Thread: Why do I always get hour glass?

Hi, new to the forums, but I've been reading a while...

I got my storm a few weeks ago - yes I know Storm 2 is coming out but I needed to get SOMETHING because my old phone was dying big time - and at first it was awesome, but lately, EVERYTHING makes it clock. And not one little cycle of the clock icon, in bad cases it goes on for like a minute.

I lock the screen - clocks
I push the button to change the call volume - clocks
I hit the menu key - clocks
Almost everything (even typing) makes it clock more often than not.

I've restarted it, cleared out all of the e-mail/messages/etc from it, updates are current, I only have 6 pictures I took on it, but it still doesn't seem as "snappy" as it should. That being said, I'm a blackberry noob and don't know if maybe I should have some different settings or whatever.

I guess I should add that I only have 2 apps on it - quick pull and the Baltimore Orioles app (yes there are really still Orioles fans out there )

Any ideas? (I'm using OS .148 if that's helpful at all)

Are you shutting down your apps properly? In other words hitting menu > close rather than just the red button? What is your app memory when this is happening (options > memory). There are a number of potential causes we can start here...

also as far as clocks on the unlock/lock process do you have memory cleaner enabled? If you do disable that and you should see a huge improvement

@ morganizer - At first I was just using the little swirly arrow (back?) key, but recently I've learned to use the menu>close thing. My app memory is 23.9 megs free as of typing this.

@Bryan - wouldn't this slow it down overall? Memory cleaner sounds like a good thing, or is it something I would just do manually?

Thanks for the input, I like the idea of the phone, and I like the features, but if it's going to bog on me, I still have 7 days before my 30 days are up, so I might re-consider the Tour (which I passed up this time around)

Disabling it stops it from constantly running. Sometimes it wants to run too much causing a device to slow down.

Ok, I disabled it and wow, HUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE difference. Thanks!!!!!!

I'm guessing now to run it manually I just re-enable it and it will pretty much run right away or something?

I'm not sure... I haven't had any experience with a memory cleaner before.

if you need to clean the mem, go back to that menu and hit the bb button, clean now

This is definitely my first smart phone, and I like it so far, but it's such a massive upgrade from what I had before that it's really kind of overwhelming :Eyecrazy:

I picked the storm over the Tour because of the bigger screen for web stuff and pretty much no other reason, I still have to get used to the keyboard (big ol honkin hands so I can't see what letters I'm touching) and I'm not used to a phone having as many options as a computer, which is why I joined here

I don't want to give up on it, I was thinking if it's as slow as it is then maybe I got a bad one or something. Plus I'm learning that I need to get some sort of screen cover for it because it gets grime on it real fast and I spend as much time wiping the screen off as I do using the phone. I don't want to turn it in without seeing it live up to its full potential, but I figure if I'm going to, I have about a week before I have to start paying penalties.

And believe me, as long as there's something I can learn, I have no qualms about reading a novel, so feel free to bring out your inner Tolstoy and help me get this thing smokin fast

umm more info please! i'm using bboc's 7.1.4 with a bunch of apps installed and can only manage 29mb on a fresh boot.

It depends on the device unfortunately. Some people have been running 29 mb free as an average and others have it in the 50's.

Don't get too concerned about your free memory unless it bogs down really slow and freezes a lot.

I have the same OS as you, and it runs between 35 and 45 mb free.

Believe it or not some run their phone fine in the teens and single digits. Sometimes it is just a number

figures lol. i pulled the battery this morning and had about 29mb free after boot up. right now, it's showing 26mb free but i didn't use it all too much today. lowest i've seen it go is 20mb so i'm not too worried.

All new users do too much memory watching. When I got my storm (my first blackberry) I was feaked out if my memory dropped below 40. I thought the phone would run poorly, like a PC when it runs out of virtual memory. Then I did not reset my phone for a few days and checked my memory and noticed I only had 5mbs of memory. I did not perform a reset because the device was still running smoothly. I went another three days before resetting it, (I uninstalled a program). So what I have learned with the blackberries is this...memory is like age, (It ain't nothin but a number). You should not be concerned unless you phone behaves poorly.

Right now if I reset I have 49.2 mb.
But I run about 40 - 42 after many days of usage.

Now I don't even worry about it, you will drive yourself cazy :aargh4: :aargh4: :aargh4:

i have had my memory read as low as .2 or 0 not sure which one but it still was kicking....welcome to bbos and the blackberry family

you can also clear the logs: show keyboard>press and hold the alt key until it locks and then press "/"/
