    GPS on storm 9530

So my girl and I both have storms. My storm is locked I am on the Telus network. GF is unlocked she is using it on Rogers. On the weekend we were testing google maps. My girls storm gps pointed exactly where she was. While mine gave me a radius of 500m. Is this because of the network or is it my device and I need to swap it? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks

    Hello burridge,
I can recall having Google Maps and my position was the same as yours...within 500m and I'm on VZW. So this leads me to believe that it's not the network. Maybe Cruznthru will jump in here sometime and give us his thoughts on what's going on with the GPS. I use the BB Maps for my positioning and it has always been spot on. Cruz is good knowledge on the GPS front so we'll hit him up

You need to go to your option/advance options/gps settings menu. There will be a tab doe 911 only. Change that to location on. You should be fine after that. PM with any other questions.

First thing to check is your GPS settings. On your phone go to options-adv options - gps. GPS Services should say Location On. If it says On, then it is most likely a network issue which Telus has locked.

in certain areas I have to give google maps a couple minutes and it will then show my exact location, try it again and let your phone chill for a little

Yeah I've always had location on as well....And like I said earlier, when I used Gmaps it alwas said within 500m however, when I switched over to BB Maps it puts me spot on wherever I'm at.....If it's network, It's Google network...

When Google maps first boots up it will say within 500 meters but if you hit the blue circle on lower right hand side, GPS will kick in and will give you a location, i.e. 10 meters.

Ok so I talked to bemerdenian he said its the CDMA network. He also said that there is a way around this:
    1) Open google maps
    2) Press on the blue locate me
    3) Options>Netwrok Connections> Change it to GSM
    4) Go back to google maps and locate
    5) Wait 1 minute and then go back to network connections and select global

Now everything works but if u restart device it forgets and you have to do this again.

    Thanks to bmerdenian for this!!!!!

I get anything between within 50 ft to 300 ft at any given time. I think it depends on weather condictions, direct line to the satelites, etc.

Nice info from Bmerd however this is something i need clarify. It is not the CDMA network that restricts GPS it is the individial carrier. Verizon, which uses CDMA in the US locked GPS on google. After many complaints VZW unlocked it. So the GPS is carrier specific, not CDMA.

Jlev, you know me man, i dont say anything except if i have proof and tested. I have an Unlocked phone and still the same. The CDMA part of the phone uses triangulation and GSM part uses the GPS part of the phone to locate. Try what i told you and you see it will work no need to confirm with any 1 not with anything Im ur man. I cant go against company rules im limited to my asnwer but trust me on this 1 :P

B I know you have tested this out. The problem is that in the US on a locked VZW device you cannot pick up a GSM network. On Telus you might be able to but not VZW. SO perhaps that works with Telus customers but since my vzw device doesn't work on GSM not sure how your fix is relevant for VZW. All I know for sure is the Blackberry Storm GPS is fully unlocked on vzw

Some say it can have a negative impact on both battery and memory. However, I have yet to see that effect on my phone. If you don't use GPS all that often just switch to E911 to be safe.
