Thread: verizon locks gps, so how do i unlock it?

question, how does this happen, to unlock the gps so i can use it with BBMaps and other apps?

or is that not able to, sorry im a noob

It should work. I have VERIZON and my gps works great. Didn't have to unlock anything. Check your settings.

+1 I have used the gps with BB maps google maps and poynt with no issues

You just have to make sure you have your gps enabled and not on 911 only

Go to option/advanced options/GPS and change from e911 to location on

on both my 2 storms i have location on and search for the sat's and never comes up

it appears i have the locked phones, i got the locations on, google maps works fine with my gps but nothing else works, cant geo tag (this is a the thing i want most)

i guess im just unlucky when it comes to this ive read a lot of people have this same problem and that verizon locks out gps

Actually VZW, in this instance, has done a good job. When the storm was released they did prevent using GPS with google maps but they changed that around. So VZW does not have a lock on GPS. As others have suggested check your GPS settings. If it still doesn't work I would suggest wiping your device and reloading your OS.

Check your application permissions to make sure it is set to allow. Then try running the gps again.

everything is setup how it should be i did a full wipe on the storm i went to 5.1-132

it just sits there searching for sat's and does nothing, only gps works is with google maps

any suggestions would be great i dont mind wiping the phone and doing things to get this stupid thing to work lol

Are you in a good location?...Reason I mention this is that when I am at work I get gps with google maps fine...but Poynt, I need to go outside to acquire gps. Check it out before you wipe....go outside.

I would think if it works with google maps...then it's not an OS issue. If it was...It probably wouldn't work at all...know what I mean ?

Signal issue...environmental issue...loacation location location issue maybe...probably.

well ive read on a bunch of sites verison locks the phones or something but a OS wipe and install other then VZ stuff i thought would make work, but nope

i think VZ even admits to locking out 3rd party apps including bbmaps, but i guess its a coin flip some people it doesnt work some does, the 2 storms i have they dont work

doesnt verizon want people to buy there apps , thats why they lock down certain features ?

sorry to sound like a Ass but the blackberry storm GPS is unlocked. It was never locked never has been locked. with google at first they kept trying to blame verizon for locking the gps but it was never locked once googled updated there maps it worked. u can wipe all day reload OSs all day but the gps will remain unlocked. u said your trying bbmaps when u launch that application are clicking on the Sat icon? im at desk inside i pu 8 sat. if it works with your googled then theres a differnt problem. it will not just work for one app and not another. also on gps apps you need to click disable A-GPS.

yea it works, but not all 3rd party apps work i have read thats going off of what i have read thats why i posted here to get the real deal, but bbmaps is now finally working for me

im diggin my storm more and more since updated the os again

I have had this same issue w/ BBMaps 'searching for satellites' endlessly. Try clicking to "start GPS navigation" rather than find 'where I am'. This sometimes seems to break through and show your current location.

I had the same problems w/ (I think) every OS version/leak until BBC v5 (and 5.1) in which this works fine for me.
