Thread: Storm 2 world recall devices prior to 02/10/2010?

According to bbleaks.com, we may see a recall of 9550 and 9520 devices worldwide manufactured before 02/10/2010 to correct a screen issue...

Rim has added something to make it more responsive.

sad that it is for "like new" aka refurbs. but if it works better and i keep my current warranty I am down.

I saw this a few days ago when BerryScoop first reported it. I have tried calling vzw tech support and saying that my lower left side of the screen becomes unresponsive sparatically. The dude at vzw said there is nothing he can do unless it happens and I can get into a store while its doing it. So as of right now there is no official recall or he would have known there was an issue and he would have sent a replacement.

So I am patiently waiting until this is actually in effect. Cause my screen does have issues.

If it happens I'll probably do it

I first heard about this a few days ago when BerryScoop dropped the news. Now BBleaks seems to be getting some reports as well. The report is that RIM has officially acknowledged that there is a defect in the 9550. The defect can cause the touchscreen to become unresponsive and unclickable. Reports are coming in that there is a new hardware revision on new 9550s and "Certified Like-New " replacements. Also, it's said that VZW will be replacing units that have the defective screen. I can, however, confirm that this has not yet gone into effect. I just got off the phone with a Verizon tech agent and he was not able to send me a replacement unless I could reproduce the issue in a VZW store. Problem is, it's random and not reproducible. So as of right now this is not in effect yet. I hope they do it soon because my unresponsive left corner is driving me nuts. We will keep you guys updated on this as more news unfolds.

I was wondering how long it would take for this to happen. I think I got the Storm 2 almost as soon as it was released and I first noticed the problem about two months later. At first, I panicked but then, the problem seemed to have went away. It happens from time-to-time but if RIM or Verizon will replace it, even if it's a refurb, and nothing else changes, I'll swap mine out, no problem. :crazy:

Mine shipped a few minutes ago. I should have it Tuesday. Hopefully I will no longer have issues pressing the manage connections hotspots or the options hotspots.

I just got off the phone with Verizon. They are shipping my new 9950 today and I'll receive it on Tuesday, no problem at all. I purchased mine on Jan.20 so it definitely was before the cutoff date.

I actually made it to a store and showed the store manager... My screen is hard and won't click across the top of the screen. My back button is kinda periodic.

The dumb*** just mashed the screen until the icon was finally selected. Then told me nothing was wrong with it.

I then showed him what it was like to click in the middle of the screen versus the hard spot at the edge. He repeated his mashing procedure and again said there was nothing wrong with it....

He told me it isn't like the S1 and it takes some getting used to...

STUPID MOTHER BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All the stores can't be blessed with experts

hopefully this spreads to Canadian storm 2's Telus is pretty brutal when it comes to this crap.

Your first sentence was your first mistake. Call VZW. They will give you the option of going to a store or have it mailed. The guys a the Verizon stores are idiots 95% of the time.

Unfortunately Nate is correct.. on my S2 my camera lens and light have dust under the cover but over the lens and at the store they said it was because i didnt have a case on my s2 that was approved by VZW... although they sell the otterbox commuter in the store and thats what i have lmao.. call in they take care of you in about 3 min.. jas if you need help you know how to get at me.. if you need my PIN let me konw

I had noticed this off and on depending on what I am doing with my S2, and I loath dealing with the store route, although I typically deal with the mgr the techs are not on the mark. I will likely call support tomorrow and ask them to swap it out and move on, no biggie.

Except one of my apps does NOT allow you to transfer from one BB to another so I have to buy it again. I think that is a PITA and so is the long 24 character reg code I mean really is that necessary.

What app won't allow you to switch bb without rebuying? That's just horrible practice.

I have a Telus 9550 and the bottom right side of the screen intermittently locks up and i have to press another part of the screen to release. Telus store tech says its normal. yeah rightt...

When you guys are getting replacements are you getting new 9550's or refurb's? Not that it makes too much of a difference, but just curious.

Won't know until Tuesday. I'm leaning toward it being one of the certified like new 9550s. They supposedly have added the screen fix to those as well. Guess we will know come Tuesday.

EDIT: Just looked at the email. It is a "Like New Certified" device

Personally, I'm leaning towards the "refurb" as well. I know it isn't new, BUT you can be comfortable in knowing it has been returned to the factory and given the "once-over". In SOME cases, a refurb is better than a new one (IMO) because a new one is a crap shoot. At least with a refurb, it's been looked over at least one more time.
