Can the cause of the phone freezing and random rebooting be because of a third party application I have installed or is this something with the OS?

yes it very well could

You could boot your device in safe mode eishas a run it for a while and see if the performance improves with your device.
This process could give you some insight on your issue.

it prevents all of your 3rd party apps from running.

Wipe the device and reload the OS and don't load any apps back on. Run it for a day with no 3rd party apps. Does it crash? If not then start to slowly add apps back in. If it still crashes with no 3rd party apps then it's the OS or HW.
