Is there ANY way to get the Playbook to see external devices? It would be great if I could attach an SD card reader so that I could copy photos onto the PB as a security backup during my forthcoming trip.

No officially in any way as far as I know. At one point when OS2 was easy to jailbreak I read that they were working on having external USB accessories such as memory cards work with the playbook OS, but I dont think that ever was finished.
That's what I feared. I will be taking some large SD cards with me so I will be able to keep them all on the SD cards but I would like to be able back them up in case of disaster or loss.
I have all the free Cloud offerings but will only be carrying my PB. It would have been nice to be able to use the PB to upload from a card reader to Dropbox. I want to avoid having to use internet cafés.
Sorry ICE but I may not have explained myself very well. The pictures will be on an SD card taken on my Canon G1 X camera. If I can transfer them to my PB I'm home and dry but I can see no way of doing the transfer as the PB does not support an external device such as a card reader as far as I can see.
I've never used a wifi sd card and I don't know if the PlayBook would recognize the photo files even if you shoot jpegs.
That's about the only thing I can think of.
Good luck,
