How to convert movies to a format suitable for the playbook

    Hello
I have been looking for a program to convert movies so I can watch them on my playbook. So far I have only found one but the trial version only does 3 mins so it is hard to know if it is worth the money!
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
    Cheers
    Helen

    Welcome to Helenz

There are several programs that will convert many formats from and to the BlackBerry PlayBook, but at a cost.

I highly doubt you will be able to find many free converting programs that requires to complete the job, and output the file as it was intended for the end user to watch properly on the BlackBerry PlayBook.

If I may suggest, I have found only one software called HandBrake, which will convert to the PlayBook, or to other formats, and for free

    Download: HandBrake Official v0.9.5

    Enjoy

Thanks for your reply - since I know little about these things...what format should I save the movie in? There are options with headings of Apple' Regular and Legacy with various subheadings but none that refer to playbook etc. Thanks for your help :-)

The recommended output video format for the BlackBerry PlayBook should be:

    Codec: (H.264)
    File Format: .MP4
    Audio: AAC-LC (I prefer 128Kbps vs 96Kbps)
    Other: 2.0 Channel stereo

It provides the best audio & video output quality.

    BlackBerry PlayBook Supported Video/Audio Formats:

File Format Component Codec Profiles Notes
    MP4
    MOV
    M4V
    3GP
    3GP2

Video H.264 Baseline, main and high (up to 4.2)profile CBP, 20 Mbps
    MPEG-4 Simple and advance simple profile Level 0, 1, 2, 3, 4A, 5, and 6
    Audio AAC AAC-LC (96 Kbps or higher), HE-AAC v1 andv2 (128 Kbps or higher), stereo 5.1
    MP3
    PCM
    ASF
    WMV
    WMA
    Video VC-1
    Audio Windows Media Audio 9
Windows Media Audio 10 8 Kbps or higher
Windows Media Audio 10 Professional 128 Kbps or higher with stereo 5.1
Windows Media Audio Lossless 128 Kbps or higher with stereo 5.1
    AVI
    Video MPEG-4 Simple and advance profile Level 0, 1, 2, 3, 4A, 5, and 6
H.264 Baseline, main and high (up to 4.2)profile CBP, 20 Kbps
    XviD
    Audio MP3 MPEG 1, 2, and 2.5, layer 3, stereo, 128Kbps
    F4V Video VP6 Software decode
    Sorenson Spark Software decode
    MP3 Audio MP3 MPEG 1, 2, and 2.5, layer 3, stereo, 128Kbps
    AAC Audio AAC MPEG 1, 2, and 2.5, layer 3, stereo, 128Kbps
WAV Audio PCM LPCM, A-LAW, U-LAW, and ADPCM

    Hope this helps you Helenz

    Hello wal4string, and welcome to

Another great free tool I found is called BlackBerry Video Converter, version 1.13.07, this utility will take video information from a local file or a DVD and encode it to play on most BlackBerry devices.

    Direct download: BBVC

    Thank you.

I use Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate. Paid-for and not cheap but it works very well.

I use Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate too for my BlackBerry Bold 9900 and PlayBook, and works great.

I could name off 10 other software titles that offers comparible features per cost.

Whichever works the best for you is what matters the most.

    Thank you.

I've been using Freemake (freemake.com) converts to all kinds of formats for the people using "the reboot software" (Windows)

Ripping doesn't get any easier than with K3B for Linux users.
