    Can't play DRM protected videos?

I just transferred some .wmv videos I bought from Blinkbox to my Playbook. They play OK on my PC but I get a message in Playbook: 'Can't play DRM protected files'. Why can't the Playbook play legally purchased videos? Is there something I can do to fix this?

    Hello rafiki, and welcome to

With regards to DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected files, the purpose of this is to prevent users from obtaining any kind of files, such as data, music, video, etc...when user attempts to play file on the BlackBerry PlayBook, you will see that message.

If your video files are DRM protected, you may need a DRM converter tool to remove the protection.

I cannot provide this information on , but a simple search on the internet can provide you with an idea on how to go about removing the DRM protection so you may playback your .WMV file(s) to your BlackBerry PlayBook.

    Hope this helps.

At this time the PlayBook cannot play DRM protected videos you will need a third part tool to convert them. Some say that Aimersoft software does a pretty good job. I have not used it though.

The PlayBook will not convert DRM protected movies. Those are movies purchased from Apple/iTunes. Converting iTunes would require the removal of the DRM copy protection. That's digital rights management. A requirement of the distribution studios, not Apple. It boils down to Apple is paying the studios for the rights to this content to be viewed on Apple devices, and the DRM agreement ensures the media cannot be accessed on unauthorized devices for copyright purposes. The main goal with DRM is to prevent piracy of course, or so that's the way we're fed it. Piracy is stronger than ever, and DRM negatively affects the honest consumers more than anything else. (Anybody remember the xbox game fiasco where good honest customers we're forced to hack their game because X title required a constant internet connection to the server and this meant shut down if your connection dropped??) Buy the content once, why should you have to pay for it again? Further research will show Apple sees it this way as well and that is why they've gone out of their way to remove DRM from all iTunes music. I'm guessing the film studios aren't quite that willing just yet.
    Anyway, I Googled DRM removal and here's what I found, https://www.google.com/#sclient=psy-ab&fhp=1&hl=en&source=hp&q=drm%20removal&pbx=1&oqRM&aq=2&aqi=g3g-s1&aql=&gs_sm=sc&gs_upl=5530l6427l0l9870l3l3l0l0l0 l0l210l375l2.0.1l3l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,c f.osb&fp=2303290c933ce3a0&biw=1280&bih=681&pf=p&pd l=300
It sure seems like a daunting chore to research all these hits. Hopefully, our PlayBook users will have better information for you so just hang on a few and there will be more answers coming.
Don't give up on the PlayBook just yet rafiki.

Thanks for that. I see that many of the tools give a choice of formats to convert to. Which is the best format for the Playbook?

    Take a look here. http://docs.blackberry.com/en/smartp..._(English).pdf

Select the "supported media types" on the left, then scroll down on the right and you'll get the information you're looking for.

As a matter as fact, the BlackBerry PlayBook recommended format for optimum video playback is (H.264) .MP4 video format.
