BlackBerry PlayBook Power Button Criticism Exposed

    [Mobile? Click Here for Video]

Were you under the impression from early reviews that the PlayBook's power button was basically going to be useless? After reading over many of the first reviews on the PlayBook, I was sold that I was not going to be using the power button, and that it was the worst piece of hardware on the device. Until... I got my hand on the tablet myself. I then realized that the PlayBook's power button is by far the best I have seen on a tablet. It does take bit more pressure to push than the iPad's power button, but that's what one would want in a power button to protect against accidental pushes. All the criticisms that it was "too hard to push", "had to dig my nail at it", "didn't stick out far enough", were simply over exaggerations in my opinion. As I demonstrate in the video above, you won't have to worry about using the power button. In fact, I never even noticed it was a problem since I laid hands on the tablet. How about you? Agree?, disagree? Let us know.

Nice video! It should help future PlayBook customers a bit...

BTW, Congrats man! Is that the 16GB version?

Thanks, that is so easy. I guess that people saw the power button and assumed (without touching it) that it looked difficult to use. People just gotta complain about new things I guess.

Yeah the power button really is not that big of deal, mine sleeps after a certain amount of time which is fine.

Completely agree, power button is a non-issue for me, never even noticed it. As with others, read the reviews and went hmm, that's a pain, but after getting it in my hands well.... works just fine. Also like the swipe across screen to wake up from sleep mode, what would be really nice is a swipe bottom up to put into sleep, swipe down, on, swipe up off. Yes grasshopper you are learning well.

Yes, I use the bezel to bezel swipe gesture to wake the PlayBook myself most of the time as it is a nice feature to have.

Couldn't agree more. The power button was something the apple fanboys latched on to as something that totally ruins the PlayBook. I've read multiple reviews talking about how it has to be pushed super hard with the edge of a fingernail to make it work. What a load of crap.

It works just as it should. Not too easy to bump accidentally and not too hard to make it annoying.

Also, with the latest OS update and additional power options added to the battery icon, the power button is not as necessary.

What surprised me quite a bit was how some well known BlackBerry sites were dogging on the power button as well. That is one of the main reasons I even made the video showing how ridiculous they sounded. When it comes down to it, sometimes reviewers like to pick at something to make their review sound more open minded so they don't come across as not being subjective.

LOL... took me ages to learn the swipe-on gesture. My fault, I didn't RTFM, specifically the part about swiping all the way from top to bottom bezel.

The power button is a non-issue. From everything I read about it before I got my Playbook, I was fearing some horribly recessed button that needed a paper-clip to activate. Total mis-reporting... it's flush on mine (so you don't hit it by accident) and requires positive pressure. It's a lovely piece of design. So don't believe what you read in the press!

    Hi Joe,

Even though I do not own a BB Playbook yet, this would have been my ultimate argument, I mean who would want an on/off button sticking out like a sore thumb causing it to be accidently prerssed. I think its neat where it is out the way but easy to find. So great video and great argument, like you said the criticism is nil and the myth has been busted.

    Thanks again Joe.

    Thanks,

I have also noticed that the criticism seems to have tamed down a bit since I released this video. One really has to see it to understand, which is the main reason I made the video, because I like how the power button was designed.

Great Idea following up with the video, looking at it clearly showed that there was no problems in using the button.

Wonder what fault someone will find next? Possibly the charging port is not a nice shape or something! lol :laugh2:

Now that you point out the fact about "accidental pressings" I can see the logic behind making the power button flush. I own the Journal Case and it's just hell tryign to use any of the physical buttons there but aside from that I love the PlayBook. Some people just need something to cling to and keep nagging.
