Indonesia Government Mulls Fining BlackBerry $1.5 Million For Future BBM Outages
After three BBM outages over the past month, Indonesia’s telecoms regulator (BRTI) has had enough. The regulatory body has proposed that BlackBerry be fined 1,000 IDR ($0.10) per subscriber, if the service is out for more than four hours. With more than 15 million subscribers in Indonesia, that fine can be quite high. All of this according to the local news site Detik. The proposal would force BlackBerry to refund Indonesian subscribers as a phone credit.
Some say this aggressive reaction from the Indonesian government is due to the fact that BlackBerry still has not provided them with a local server to help regulate criminal activity. Whatever the cause is for the reaction fines of this magnitude start adding up very quickly. This raises another question. What will be the effects of an outage when BBM goes cross-platform?
