Discuss: India's Telecom Companies Implement Lawful Real Time Interception Of BlackBerry Services

India's telecom companies have agree to provide the government real-time interception of BlackBerry services. Under pressure from India's Department of Telecom, the companies have implemented software that will allow India's government to intercept messages sent from consumer devices using BlackBerry Messenger.

India's government has long considered RIM's encrypted messaging services as a threat to national security. Stating that their "aim is to make sure that whatever goes through our networks, we should be able, if required, intercept it... "

RIM was also asked to provide a mechanism that would help telecom companies, comply with government demands. The company agreed and provided a server at a key location; as its solution.

“We are pleased to inform you that RIM has now delivered a solution that enables India’s wireless carriers to address their lawful access requirements for our consumer messaging services, which include Blackberry Messenger (BBM) and Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) email,” the company said. “The lawful access capability now available to RIM’s carrier partners meets the standard required by the Government of India for all consumer messaging services offered in the Indian marketplace." the company continued.

While this solution allows India's government to intercept consumer based messages, RIM stated that it does not does not "extend to Blackberry Enterprise Server."

The DoT set a deadline for the end of last year for telecom providers to come under government compliance. This is not the first time RIM's encrypted services have come under fire. The company has faced opposition from authorities from a few different countries over the past year.
