Discuss: Boy Burned As BlackBerry Curve 9320 Blows Up In Bed

An English school boy was severely burned after his BlackBerry Curve 9320 blew up in his bed. While he was sleeping the device malfunctioned and spontaneously combusted, leaving the boy with burns to his legs and feet. The boy's mother stated that after she went to sleep she heard a loud "pop" sound, and then heard her son "screaming at the top of his voice, shouting ‘my bed's on fire’”.

Both parents are concerned that this type of freak accident may happen to another person and have since had a video conference with RIM officials. RIM too is concerned and has stated the company takes "claims of this nature very seriously and are investigating this matter as a priority." The family is insisting that the device be recalled from shops before the holiday.

While these types of accidents are rare and often times exaggerated, it just goes to show you how powerful those little batteries are inside our mobile devices.

It is irresponsible to keep any 'electrical' device in one's bed since any mobile phone will quickly reach an abnormal temperature because of bodyheat and bed covers at this time of the year ! There have been accidents with different brands of mobile phones people keeping their Phones on the beach in the sun etc.
One does not keep a powerful device in the bed but on a table next to the bed for example.
Parents in this case are in my opinion responsible as well !

Good point, Meissner. The body heat from being under a blanket could definitely put the heat of the device over the edge.

Despite manufacturers best efforts, the battery safety features can fail. Lithium is a very volatile substance. Fortunately, these failures are rare unless there is a design flaw in the battery itself, or as Meissner Bollmann states, if the device is allowed to grossly overheat. I recommend reading this study, http://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/pdf...rieshazard.pdf , and paying close attention to pages 62 thru 69 of the PDF.

Maybe the kid had his BlackBerry in a toaster in his bed. That would explain a lot.
