Discuss: RIM Partnership Could Make A Massive Difference, Says Billionaire

A RIM partnership. That is something we have all heard before, but does it even make sense? Canadian Billionaire Terry Matthews thinks it does. In an interview with BloombergBusinessweek Matthews thinks a partnership could make a "massive difference." After last months financial report the company is still showing some signs of a tarnished two year financial decline. However, the company did show smaller than expected loss and a higher than expected increase in revenue. RIM's CEO Thorsten Heins expects the market to become excited again once his company releases BlackBerry 10 early in 2013.

In the end all bets are on BlackBerry 10. Although RIM is counting on the success of BlackBerry 10 smartphones, there has to be more than just mobile devices for the company. Gaining the alliance of partners could help with R&D and add additional revenue, the billionaire said.

More partnerships would be nice, but who? One candidate could be the tech power player Microsoft. Microsoft has been in the tech market for quite a while now and has some great technology and patents that could be very useful to RIM in more than one way. RIM and Microsoft have already worked together in the past. Microsoft has allowed RIM to use its exFat technology within their devices. On a larger scale, RIM and Microsoft have partnered to allow for BlackBerry services through Microsoft Office 365. RIM will also be using Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol as their primary sync engine within their up and coming BES 10 service.

Although nothing formal has been discussed, the company already has a lot invested in Microsoft. So an even more exclusive partnership with a company like Microsoft, could give RIM a significant edge in the market as well as provide some additional revenue.

So what are we talking about partnering on? I agree that it could be a good thing though but wonder what they would do in such partnership?

    RIM/Sony Partnership

Sony readily comes to mind as a possible candidate. RIM has QNX technology, a solid enterprise presence and 80 million BlackBerry subscribers; Sony has personal, home and automotive entertainment systems, a successful gaming platform and impressive music and movie libraries. A partnership, if executed correctly could be mutually beneficial to both companies.
