Discuss: RIM Confirms The 16 GB PlayBook Will Be Discontinued

Well it looks as though we can say good by to the 16 GB version of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Earlier in the week we told you that RIM was thinking about discontinuing the 16 GB PlayBook, but at that time there was no conformation on whether or not it was actually going to happen. Now there is. The PR team over at RIM issued the following statement regarding the matter:

"RIM will no longer be making the 16 GB model of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The 16 GB PlayBook will continue to be available for distributors and retailers while quantities last. We continue to remain committed to the tablet space and the 32 GB and 64 GB models of the BlackBerry PlayBook continue to be available from our distributors and retailers around the world.

There is more value for our customers in the higher capacity models (32 GB, 64 GB), and as such we have decided to focus our efforts here."

Now this may come as sad news to some, but the reasoning behind it just makes sense. 16 GB of space simply is not enough room for most people. After downloading a couple of high-definition movies one can quickly see their space dwindling. For those of you thinking about purchasing a PlayBook now would be a great time as the last of the 16 GB PlayBook's are now being flushed out of retailers inventory. There may not be a price change, but if cost is an issue you may want to get one while they last.

But the 16 GB version was competing with Kindle Fire.

Have been pondering picking up a PlayBook, guess it'll be either 32 or 64GB's. I can see 16 being too small once a few HD movies and some music are loaded up!

Yea, I wouldn't get a 16G if you are a media buff. Go 32G atleast.

With a few dozen games & 2-3 HD movies, my 16GB Playbook has almost no available space. IF you are a music, app or movie buff you'll want a 32GB or to be safe, a 64GB.

As an owner of a 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook, I thought that it would be enough room, but I was wrong.
As a music and movie buff, I really enjoy listening and watching (HD) movies as we all know the PlayBook can show off it's awesome output quality.
To be honest, not much for music as I listen to music via my Bold 9900, but I truly love watching TV clips and full length movies which I converted from DVD or Blu-Ray to PlayBook, the video & audio quality is outstanding, but so is the amount of data consumed.
An example would be a DVD (4.2-4.6GB) to a converted PlayBook movie (1.2-1.8GB or more).
So I can see why RIM has decided to discontinue making the 16GB version to focus their efforts to the 32 and 64GB capacity.
    Thank you.
