The Daily Start-Up: BlackBerry Partners Fund Launches With $150M To Spend

"Despite the struggles of Research In Motion to defend its BlackBerry device against encroachments by other smartphones, the BlackBerry Partners Fund, in which RIM is an investor, appears to be thriving."

Many investors do not view “gamification” as a viable, standalone industry. That’s not stopping Spigit, a self-proclaimed gamification start-up that just raised an additional $15.2 million to help businesses inspire and harness their employees’ and customers’ best ideas, VentureWire has learned. The Series E round, led by Warburg Pincus, brings Spigit’s total capital raised to $41.2 million.

Also in today’s VentureWire: CTERA Networks raised a third round of funding led by Venrock, with strategic investor Cisco Systems and current investor Benchmark Capital joining in…Yummly, an online recipe search service, said it closed a $6 million Series A financing round to add employees, expand marketing and improve its website…and OpenView Ventures is prepared to bankroll a fresh batch of expansion-stage companies, having closed a third fund at $206 million.

    Points to Ponder:

    • First, I do believe that RIM does have a lot of things to offer to their massive consumers. Though RIM is having a hard time at the moment to beat Apple and be the number 1 again in terms of Smartphones, I am pretty sure that they will be able to get back on track and be able to provide the needs of the market.
    • Second, funding a huge amount of money for just Games is not really a good outlet to be on top. RIM should still focus on their main asset which is being great in wireless communication because having an advanced and improved system, software and infrastructure will definitely gonna be able to give them a spot again on top.
    • Lastly, if RIM would be able to hear their markets out especially in terms of pricing, then I can certainly say that slowly they will be able to rise up again. In this type of industry, taking risk is sometimes a hard but an effective way of reaching goals. Also, the support and feedback of the market is important to be able to strike the real needs and wants of everyone.
