QNX-powered BlackBerry Superphone could launch before end of 2011?

Rumors are swirling around the internet today as different reports are coming out suggesting we could a QNX-powered BlackBerry before the end of 2011. Last week we got wind of some information about the Superphone dubbed the "Colt." Debates over whether this phone should feature a single or dual-core processor have been raging on. All in all, this latest rumor would have BlackBerry's first Superphone coming out much earlier than the anticipated Q1 of 2012 suggestions.

Is RIM trying hard to push out the Colt before the holidays? We've already heard that RIM has dropped plans for a 10" PlayBook to focus on this phone, so it wouldn't be strange to see this be accurate.

Research In Motion does need to be careful to not let too much information leak out. If people find out that this phone will drop in December, they will most likely think they same thing I thought when I first read this, "I'll pass on BlackBerry 7 devices and wait a couple of months for the next generation." That would definitely spell trouble for Research In Motion as they need this line of OS 7 devices to at least help them make a come back to the top of the smartphone world.

As always though, keep in mind things change constantly in the business world and whenever we hear about these rumors we must take them all with a grain of salt; the largest grain of salt you can find.

    • If a QNX-based BlackBerry Superphone comes before 2011 is over, will you be skipping OS 7 devices altogether? Let us know

This would be a terrible mistake by RIM if this is true. OS7 just came out, it would be bad for them to rush something like this. Take your time develop something complete ans superior.

Couldn't agree more with you. It would be similar to the whole Tour owners being pissed cuz the Bold 9650 was released less than a year afterwards with a trackpad thing... bad PR move... I want the superphone... I do but I want RIM to succeed more...

The biggest mistake is if they release new QNX phones without giving these new OS 7 devices the capability to upgrade to the QNX based OS. They'd have to do a trade in device program to keep the riots from starting.

Do you think that the OS7 devices will have the ability to upgrade to QNX? I am not so sure, but I can tell you this. They better find a way real quick to integrate these QNX devices to work with BES, and allow casual users to theme or they are right back where they started.

If it has a solid GPU and a good OS then does it really need to be dual core?

Guess we will have to wait and see.

I don't think it will be a full PlayBook QNX OS that the devices will get. I think it will be a QNX hybrid called OS 8. And yes, hopefully OS 7 devices now will be able to upgrade to the QNX based OS if it only means a few months in between launch dates. A lot if users are on 2 year wait periods between upgrades for their device. A lot of OS 7 users will be pissed to find out that QNX OS 8 is out just a few months later to find out they are stuck with OS 7.

And in the JT interview with Mike Kirkup, he did say that there will be Theme studio for OS 7, but it will be changed a bit to reflect better compatibility with apps so there is no conflict. So I imagine they will continue the Theme Studio on into future OS'.

Not really, but it seems that with higher video and 4G that the duel core may be necessary. I could be wrong, just a guess.

Look at the OS7 devices, 720p HD video playback and record look pretty pretty good on a bloated and outdated OS that has a fresh coat of paint on it, and those are single core devices. With QNX you would not need any of that legacy bloat in the OS to slow it down, but it will need to pack more memory than the current devices.

I'm talking more specifically about video streaming such as video chat with Skype, ect. To have it be super quality while being smooth may bog down a single core.

As far as OS 7 compared to OS 6 devices, it's night and day for sure. I'm exited to see what a QNX OS 8 will bring.

I'm with you on this Joe. I believe it will need the dual core to be successful with streaming video and Skype type apps. With a single core, it will be ugly to try a Skype chat.
