As an Torch owner I have to disagree on this.
The Torch touch screen is one of the best touch screens I have ever used and I have used iPhone, and iPhone 3G, Storm and Storm 2. The typing speed can't be compared to the surepress technology on the Storm 2 and if I want to go faster I can even slide open my Torch and voila physical keyboard
Solving your "accidental touches" you have an option for the Torch where you can up the delay seconds. This gives you the option of selecting before committing .
