Thread: Rumor: RIM Pushing Carriers To Get OS Approved

Some like to kick others when they're already down. After RIM's last conference call it was evident the Canadian company is struggling. Well today a new rumor came out from the BGR which basically mentions how RIM is pushing carriers too far to approve their new device OSes.

As mentioned previously, once RIM internally tests their devices and operating systems they are sent out to each carriers T.A. (Technical Acceptance) Department to get approved for release. Some "experts" conclude that a manufacturer like RIM shouldn't be pushing these carriers for approval because it could lead to faulty operating systems at the release of the device.

I, like many other BlackBerry lovers, beg to differ. One of the biggest complaints against RIM has been the apparent lack of urgency in releasing devices to the public. With this information it becomes pretty obvious that it's not RIM's fault to begin with. According to BGR's source, this practice has been occurring since the first BlackBerry Bold 9000 was slated to be released. AT&T apparently hadn't approved the device while Rogers in Canada had. So why is this a story now? Kick them while they're down because back then, RIM was still doing pretty good in the smartphone market.

So pick your issue then. Are you upset that RIM isn't releasing devices quickly? Or are you mad at the way RIM is doing everything possible to release them?

Obviously, no one likes buggy OSes. But people, bugs are part of any and every operating system and every manufacturer pushes carriers to release their phones as soon as possible and if any bugs are present they release an update soon after. Remember the Android SMS bug? Yeah so do a lot of people.

Now can we please stop piling on RIM.

All BGR seems to do, specially J. Geller, is bash anything RIM related and praise all that is Apple.
Yeah, RIM isn't at it's best and it won't change anytime soon, but come on...
RIM is far from dead, still sells and makes a profit, yet all these guy sees is bad news. People jumping to Samsung (the people that did the marketing and design, they should be fired anyway) or Apple is seen as "rats leaving a sinking ship" I wish I had a sinking ship worth a few billion in cash.
RIM has the following issues to resolve;
- Cut back delays.
If you can't make the device in time with the specs as told, don't announce it. It hurts when you talk the talk, but can't walk the walk.
- Give a new and fully updated OS to your upcoming devices. Yeah I mean QNX, so forget OS7 and surprise us, amaze us, shock and aw!
- Start from scratch with staff.
Dump the oldies that are stuck in the 2008 era and have a few "youngsters" have a go. They know what today's people want and need.
- Lead, don't follow.
All I hear from friends is that "Apple has this, Android has that" and yeah, RIM is behind with a lot (amount of MP in camera, front facing one, memory / processors, useful apps (which means that it doesn't matter what country your from or even make them seeing iOS and Android have a lot of similar apps), list goes on...
- Separate from the rest. Now all RIM has is it's BBM and the secure email, but what consumer cares about secure email? 99% of the consumers buy's a BB for BBM.

Sorry for the long rant, but I get quit ticked off about bashing in general and men effortlessly ruining a company in almost less then a year. And ofcours biassed people like J. Geller from BGR.
So what if the OS is unfinished? I never had a problem with an OS. Not any big ones...

So that means the co-CEO gets to eat the crumbs that fall to the floor?

While certainly not intending to second guess RIM's business model, it does not make any sense to allow the carriers to have the final say on either device or OS release...the bottom line is pretty simple - the carriers are only going to look out the their business intrests not RIM's. To allow the carriers this much leverage is almost unspeakable. A great case in point is AT&T...they a slower than my dead grandmother when it comes to releasing upates for BB OS's; this action only tends to derive greater agnst towards RIM because most people do not understand the process - they just want their updates.

I say good for RIM in beginning to hold the carriers to the grind stone - they certainly have it coming.

It is all the carriers fault (AT&T!!!!!) that the OS upgrades are not released to their users. If I only used AT&T OS releases, I'd be throwing my Torch into the ocean. I bought the Torch last year and there has been ONE OS upgrade release from AT&T...ONE!!!!! There have been several OS upgrades, so many that I don't have time to count them, and AT&T sees fit to approve one. How pathetic.
It is because AT&T is still beating their chests and pointing at the iPhone as the best, greatest phone on earth. They are still pointing at the iPhone saying, "Look what we did two years ago, isn't that great?" What AT&T has released since has been very poor quality devices cuz they are still phrasing that damn phone. The other devices are so buggy, it's sad. They just cannot seem to be able to look forward.

Right, it wasn't till just a couple months ago that AT&T released OS 6 for the capable devices.

AT&T lists 3 for the Torch, .141, .246, and .526.
Now, there is a leaked .600 which will be official by the end of the week. I don't think that I will see AT&T releasing the .600 before my Torch dies.

bgr hates RIM, its as simple as that. I read the articles and laugh, i cant even take him serious anymore especially since he has so many un-named Very reliable sources. IMO, i think RIM is right to push the updates for their phones. I think its the carriers fault that were not seeing these devices. Look at the 9650 for example, sprint launched way before verizon did and to be honest, i think the sprint build that was loaded on the phones was better than what verizon approved. We see so many leaked updates that perform so much better than what the latest "official" update is.
