Press Release: Research in Motion Reports First Quarter Fiscal 2012 Results

The reports are in, and while there are some positives, the negatives outweigh this time around. Net income for the first quarter was a low $695 million, or $1.33 per diluted share, compared with net income of $934 million, $1.78 per diluted share in the fourth quarter of last year - that's down 26%. Also, revenues came in at $4.9 billion, down from $5.6 billion in the fourth quarter, or a 12.5% drop.

And as to smartphone and tablet shipments, during the first quarter, RIM says that it shipped approximately 13.2 million BlackBerry smartphone devices and about 500,000 BlackBerry Playbook tablets. However, these numbers are what has shipped, not been sold. RIM also is not releasing the official number for PlayBook's sold. I'm guessing that the number may reflect negativity on how the PlayBook has fared in its' first few couple months since launched. As a result of its declining financials, RIM said that it will begin a series of layoffs beginning this quarter.

However, there is a upside to all of this. RIM seems to be kicking it in the rear as we heard today from a Verizon CMO that Big Red would be selling three of the upcoming BlackBerry devices in Verizon stores. That is when RIM had the glory days, when Verizon was their top seller. Perhaps a rekindled relationship between Verizon and RIM can bring the US subscriber base up and save RIM from a bad fall.

What are your thoughts? Any predictions?

That could be a good move for RIM!

I think that a well ran Verizon corroboration will be the only thing to turn around the US market.

I agree with you on that one "J"!!!! I continue to see the ads for the Playbook and they tend toward fun and game play. Nothing showing work or production apps so, where is the incentive for business users to get on board or justify as a business tool when all you see is movie trailers, games and surfing. The tools are great but change up the story line now and then. We constantly see apps showing work tools and reading to children or children using the iPad for reading in school and even flight manuals for pilots (one local airline). So, my question is who is the target market for the Playbook? Maybe if they change up the ads they will get more people on board as the competition is growing with same features now and lower pricing.
I want to stay with BB, but this is getting rather difficult when we see nothing regarding a release date for the S3 or OS love for the S2. If VZ is coming out with these it sure would be nice to have some concrete word on something. I am helping a friend become one with her NEW Droid and I have to say it is impressive but I am hanging on but not for much longer. My RIM stock is taking a beating over the past two months. There is only sooooo much a supporter can take….before change has to happen.
It has been pretty much BBOS that has kept me loyal to RIM, it would be nice if RIM would pay attention if they aren’t already. You sure don't don't hear the competitors saying they are laying off people...wow what a statement.

It sure does seem that the AT&T/Apple co-op has become AT&T's downfall. Relying on one product, which it appears that AT&T is doing with Apple, to keep your company afloat is such a bad business plan.

The most recent news confirmed by a Verizon CMO is that 3 BlackBerry devices will be coming to Verizon this year. I'm betting that the S3, which will release as the Torch 9850 will be on the list. I remember a couple months ago a video leaked, which was quickly yanked by RIM, that showed the 9850 with a Verizon logo on the back. So RIM and Verizon have had these plans for some time now.

Don't know about Jrod, (we're both AT&T customers), but not matter what Verizon releases, I will be unable to use their service due to my home location. Big red has no towers up here and AT&T won't allow them to rent space on their towers. As it is now, I can get 2-3 bars depending on different locations within my home, as well as outside. I have hills all around my house except for a small valley area where signal can get through. AT&T is the only one of the Big 3 that I can use at my home.
