Apple and Google continue to gain on RIM's loss

Last Friday comScore released its latest mobile subscriber market share report, showing the continued trend of Google and Apple gaining on the falling numbers of RIM. To many of us BlackBerry fans out there, this comes as no surprise as patience begins to wear thin with the new BlackBerry OS 7 devices still far out of reach. Google's Android U.S. market share jumped 5.2 percentage points to a 34.6% grip of the industry. Meanwhile, Apple’s iOS market share grew a marginal 1.3 percentage points to a 26% share. RIM’s BlackBerry OS share fell from 30.4% in January to 25.7%, for a loss of 4.7% - a telling number to say the least. I don't have to beat a dead horse here, we all know why the number trends have continued the way they have. I think a nice surprise from RIM right now would be ideal to gain consumer confidence and boost RIM back on top in US smartphone subscribers. See the comScore chart below for all the numbers...

I was all set to turn in my iPhone 4 for a Bold 9930 and then Apple announces iOS 5. I wasn't expecting it to be the major update that it is and then they hit you with iCloud, which is free. And to top it all off iMessage! I don't think I can go back to BlackBerry now. I have the PlayBook and like it, but its no where near as polished as the iPad. The only way that I would end up getting a Bold, is if for some reason it was released before the iPhone 5, but I seriously doubt that.......

BlackBerry will always continue to have a niche in the market, especially with the candybar qwerty keyboard devices, but RIM has to step up their game BIGTIME! I'm curious to hear some kind of official statement from RIM as to "why so long on the Bold 9900?"

It doesn't make sense that they can't get the new Bold out next month. Apple couldn't have timed this better. It's like they have a mole high up in the RIM hierarchy and they are taking them down one step at a time. I love BlackBerry, but I hate what I see as RIM used to lead the subscribers market way out in front.

I think it's not going to be as bad as people think.
I think Blackberry is going back to it's roots. A solid corperate device for email, messaging, contacts etc.
Rim grew (revenue I think, by 40%), okay it's share (piece of the pie) got smaler but thats because the pie got bigger.
Meaning alot more phones being sold but RIM isn't selling less, new buyers are chosing other devices which makes it look like RIM's share is shrinking. Like selling a million when 10 million are being sold when it used to be selling a million when 9 million are being sold.
Wasn't Nintendo the third brand in game consoles years and years?
RIM knows they need to do something and I think they have something planned.

I'm talking about the US smartphone market. It's a sad to go into a tech store and half of everyone you talk to used to be a BB user now gone to Apple or Android.

It's different in other parts of the world where BlackBerry is relatively new in popularity. The US market is the strongest market for high end smartphone devices and it hurts RIM to take a hit like it has been.

Okay, we (The Dutch) had Blackberry since the 81** came out. But those were used on a consumer base as well.
Before that the 7*** lines were only business phones.
We see a shift in the market, but I think on a global scale RIM isn't as big as it once was. But I still think RIM has a bright future and in time they will close the gap.
It will take time and a killer device seeing a lot of people are sceptic about RIM's capabilities.

RIM is basically a Business-orientated company, right? I think they are trying to make it the best that they can, and rule out any hacking and the like. What if, for example, you went out and bought something that was supposedly the most secure smartphone in the market, but sometime later it gets hacked? Would you buy another phone from that company again?

Plus, for all the people who use BlackBerries for business are perfectly satisfied with it. The problem is that the market for Business-type phones is much smaller than the market for gaming/normal usage. For example, let's say that an average Joe walks into a mobile phone store and looks around. He sees both a BlackBerry and an iPhone. The BlackBerry device lineup is quite big, but there is only 1 type of iPhone. He looks around at the signs, the specs, talks to the assistant, and eventually decides for an iPhone. Why is this? Because he would use his phone for normal usage than he would for his work.

Most my classmates have a BlackBerry. I'm 99% sure that they bought it primarily for BBM. Hell, even I bought it for BBM. With Apple's iMessage, RIM is going to have to up the game a bit, or lose many consumers.

That's my 2 cents :)

Right, the Dutchies may have had BB around for awhile, but they are a very small part of the market. When you look at other potentially huge markets in the world like Indonesia, India, China, ect, BlackBerry is fairly new and has that cool aspect to it. US subscribers are over that part of being a BB user and are demanding more from RIM. That is why RIM's biggest market, the US, is suffering.

The upcoming devices are powerful enough, but my fear is that users have already seen competitor phones more popular features such as a front facing camera for video chat, flash support, better app store.

It's not enough for RIM to stay in the business market and keep afloat as a super power in the device market. And that's my rant for now. :D

Haha, don't think they'll be overcome, but they could end up like Palm.

Y'know, I used to have one of those old old old Palm touchpad things...not a phone. It had a black and white display, and it was great for wasting time by drawing pictures with the stylus. I should look for it...

As good as you guys are making your case sound for RIM the truth is they have fell behind and let's be real what is RIM putting out that Apple, and Droid is not putting out and faster. Everyone is getting email and speadsheets on phones today, so Yes it's all about the consumer, and the way things are looking the consumers CAN NOT wait on RIM any longer:phone:

Right, like I said, as much as I love RIM and the layout and features they provide. Their devices have been coming late to the consumer table. Come this fall they needed the upcoming devices to have front facing cameras, 4G capabilities, running OS QNX (or something similar), be able to run the Android player for Android apps, ect. They haven't done enough for us, the consumer, which is why the numbers are declining in the US market - the most competitive market.

I will say they did a pretty good job getting the PlayBook into the market when Apple had already innovated that area of devices.

RIM needs to feel the heat from us, the fanbase, so that they know we demand more from them. For me, BBM and push email isn't enough. I want what the competitors have also.

Same. Apple have lots of cool features that I'd like to see incorporated into a BlackBerry.

I've been trying to get a official statement from RIM as to why the new Bold 9900 isn't out yet. I haven't gotten or even heard any answer as to why, just that they would release it if they could but it will take till this fall. This sort of surprises me considering at the BlackBerry World 2011 event they had fully working models being demoed and showcased. Makes one wonder what the holdup is?
