RIM Cracks the List of Top 5 Phone Makers
Market research firm IDC has issued a press release and for the first time RIM is making an appearance in the list of top 5 phone makers worldwide. The one thing that jumps out is that RIM is the only vendor in the top 5 who solely produce smartphones. This just supports the trend that users are slowly migrating to smartphones throughout the world. During the first quarter of 2010, RIM sold 10.6 million devices worldwide driven mostly by the popularity of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Curve 85xx series. Compared to the same period last year, this represents a 45.2% increase. Pretty impressive if you ask me. The top 5 phone makers in order are Nokia, Samsung, LG, RIM and Sony Ericsson. RIM knocked Motorola out of the top 5 for the first time since the inception of IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker in 2004. Some good news for RIM, especially when it comes to the bottom line, but in order to really compete with Apple and Android, they really need to wow us BlackBerry users over the next few months.
