BlackBerry Partners Fund Launches BlackBerry "Super Apps" Developer Challenge
Today at WES, the BlackBerry Partners Fund launched the third annual BlackBerry Partners Fund Developer Challenge. The focus for this years competition will be Super Apps. These are apps specifically designed to make the most of the BlackBerry platform and native features such as the inbox, calendar, address book and many others. The apps will be judged according to seven categories specifically indicated by RIM such as Productivity, Fun & Games as well as a handful of others. Most importantly the app needs to embody the characteristics of the Super App. In the words of RIM, they want to create apps "that people cannot live without." The challenge will recognize BlackBerry apps on a regional basis across four global areas (North America, Latin America, Europe/Middle East/Africa and Asia Pacific) so the types of apps submitted will be vast and diverse which is great. They are really stepping up to the plate here as total prize value is over US$1.5 Million. A pretty big incentive if you ask me as a successful entry can really help a developer achieve commercial success and notoriety. Prizes will be awarded as follows:
- Up to 400 Regional Selections will receive a free BlackBerry smartphone
- Up to 28 Regional Semi-Finalists will each receive prize packages worth over USD$16,000
- Up to 12 Regional Finalists will each receive prize packages valued at almost USD$35,000
- Up to four Regional Winners will each receive a prize pack valued at USD$85,000 including promotion services, App World support and Elite membership in the BlackBerry Alliance Program
App developers can begin submitting their apps today and continue through September 6, 2010.
