RIM Announces BlackBerry Mobile Voice System

Today RIM announced Mobile Voice System 5 (MVS) with voice over Wi-Fi. BlackBerry MVS 5 works with Cisco Unified Communications Manager to provide a business user with the ability to use their regular desk phone number and extension from their BlackBerry. With MVS an employee will be able to use a single work phone number shared between their desk phone and BlackBerry smartphone and make and receive enterprise calls on their BlackBerry over a Wi-Fi connection, adding to the existing capability available over cellular networks. Some Key Features include:

• Wi-Fi network access controls to set which Wi-Fi networks employees can access
• Network preference settings with the option of prioritizing the use of Wi-Fi or cellular for making phone calls
• Authentication to help ensure that only authorized BlackBerry smartphones have access to the corporate phone system
• Incoming call filtering based on allowed and blocked caller lists

What a fantastic application for the BIS user?

Why is RIM keeping this from the masses? Imagine the uptake of BB's if this feature was released to the public instead of just corporate clients.

You could use WiFi almost everywhere to call anyone. BIS would be needed to use apps and data BBM etc) but we could get rid of the Mobile Carriers (well in a way)

I agree!! Its just like the HP eprint thing. Its only for BES users as well. These are prime features to have for all consumers not just corporate. Its very frustrating if u ask me.

That's just it.
It's not going to be rolled out to BIS users.
Looks like from the reading I have been doing is that this is targeting BES subscribers.

At WES 2010, RIM announced BlackBerry MVS 5.0 and we gave you a little bit of insight on what it was about. Just as a refresher, MVS gives BES users the ability to use their device as their desk phone. You can make transfers to another extension or number with simplicity. Toggle between your work phone, and your mobile phone with one click. Using either Wi-Fi or your mobile network the call integrity remains the same giving you the ability to use this from anywhere around the world. Just think about how much time can be saved at work going through voicemails. Granted some of us like to keep our work out of the household, but depending on your business/employer you could save yourself from a "case of the Mondays". Although it wouldn't benefit me, let’s hope that RIM comes up with something for the BIS users out there that would love to use this to their advantage. The video goes into further detail and removed any confusion that I had and maybe it will do the same for you.

(Sigh) Why do BES users only get the cool stuff? If RIM doesnt start releasing some of this stuff to BIS users people wont be looking at Blackberry much longer. These are the types of features that differentiate Blackberry from Apple and Android. These are the features that can draw in more people and give RIM a leg-up against the competition. If only RIM would stop focusing so much on making money and focus on making a better smartphone experience..........oh whoops. There I go using my imagination again :p
