Amazon Announces Kindle app for Blackberry
Amazon, maker of the ebook reader Kindle, is looking to expand their ebook reach. Already with apps for the iPhone and Windows PCs, Amazon recently announced that they will be releasing a Kindle app for Blackberry devices.
The announcement has been made official on the Amazon website. A release date is speculated as "Coming Soon", so it could literally be before the end of the year or it could be some time after the new year. Guess we will just have to wait and see!
Amazon is expected to sell about 550,000 Kindles in 2009, with $301.4 Million from the device and electronic books. While ebook readers are a relatively new concept, there is no shortage of options. There are estimated to be about 40 different types of ereaders currently available to the public, including Barnes & Noble's Nook.
While a Kindle app for Blackberry will definitely help the growth within the consumer segment of the market, its biggest impact is expected to be in the business segment. The reason behind this is that Blackberrys are still seen as a business first device by many, especially Amazon in this case.
There is no word yet if this will be a free or paid app.
