I hate to be the Grinch but honestly if you really think about it....when has RIM ever launched an add-on app that has been developed by them and consistently only updated (released) with newly updated OS releases..... the only add-on app that's packaged with RIM's OS releases and has been "released" stand-alone (that I know of) was the LEAKED BBM 5.0.0.8.

I do hope I'm wrong about the shenanigans.... but does it make sense for BBM 5.0 to be released, with features that only work on a 5.0 OS, before the 5.0 OSes are officially released and in place?

From the original announcement of the release....

    # Enhanced SMS -Allows for a conversational chat-like user experience with a single contact list for the most personal mobile-to-mobile communications

    * Note: BlackBerry® Device Software 5.0 and later is required for the SMS functionality.

    # Large Media File Transfer - Users can send/receive large file transfers up to 6 megabytes for pictures, files and audio.

    * Note: BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 is required to receive large media files.

It sure is fun to anticipate a new release, but don't get too excited. From what I have heard, BBM5(2.5) isn't ready for primetime yet.

Hopefully its not too far off though.

Maybe they secretly have a higher build that has been Top Secret.
One of our ninjas hit us up to let us know that the official version of BlackBerry Messenger 5 will drop tomorrow for Verizon Wireless customers. CrackBerry reported this yesterday and we can 100% confirm it. Our information was specific to Verizon Wireless but we’d imagine it’s a BlackBerry-wide release. All BlackBerry handsets running OS 4.5 or above will be eligible for the upgrade, too. Most of you are probably running leaked builds already, but the launch of the official version means that your not-so-cool friends will have it as well.-BGR
Anyways this is good enough for me.

Enhanced SMS is integrated into the 5.0 OS. BBM simply adds to the feature.

I'm a Noob to Blackberries, but I've been browsing these forums for a month looking for a new bbm. Is there hope that RIM will drop an "Offical" release of Bbm 2?

    BTW, this site is great!
