Video: BlackBerry Messenger vs iMessage - Side by Side Comparison

    [Mobile? Click Here for Video]

In this video I give a quick side by side comparison of BlackBerry Messenger compared to Apple's new messaging platform, iMessage. Keep in mind that iMessage is still in beta so this version may not be the final version that is released this fall when iOS 5 becomes official. At this point in time, I'd have to say that BlackBerry Messenger is still a better option. iMessage doesn't offer that customization that BBM has. But I do say that Apple has the upper hand with video chat integration right from the Messages app. But this can also be seen as a completely different feature all together.

The video was meant to just touch on the main points of each software, so if you have any questions or comments, or if I missed something you would like to point out, please let me know.

Edit: I forgot to mention in the video that you can also send video messages as well with iMessages.

*Applauds Joe* This is a great review. Bringing the best and not so best about both messaging platforms.
I do agree that RIM needs to do something about the front facing cameras, Apple did a great one on that. Do have to say that BBM is a better allround app. Most of the things that can be done are integrated (eg voice notes) into it.
BGR should read this, this is how it should be done and I'm not saying that because I'm a member. I think everybody likes one or the other. I prefer BBM, but even I'm not perfect
    Way too go.

    Thanks!

To put it another way, BBM is more fun to use, while iMessage is more of a perk at this point. The main advantage of iMessage is not having to use up your limited SMS/MMS text messages. BBM has the whole profile/group feel to it that gives you a more personalized feeling. BBM feels more like it's something about you, rather than just a convenient way to chat and send information.

Also, BBM has just started to become integrated into 3rd party apps, so there is a whole new world for BBM to expand on there.

Better charge the iPhone Joe, it was down to 15% dude.
Great short vid, thanks. All RIM has to do is a front facing camera and BBM would totally rock the IM world.

Excellent review, Joe. I like how you showed both apps and their features in (what seems to me) an unbiased way, not many people would do that

One question I have though, is how you got iOS5. Is it up for download somewhere on the net?

That is one way to look at it. Like an integrated crunch SMS.

It is early beta, so I'll update this thread if any big changes come about.

Watched too many Sesame Street vids with the kid.

Yep, I think that since phones are able to handle faster upload and download speeds, especially with 4G becoming available, video chat becomes something that is fun, rather than just a series of Hellos and crashes. The iPhone has Facetime chat with anyone else on an iPhone, and it works pretty good. The PlayBook has a video chat as well so users can chat with anyone who has a PlayBook. Now just time to port that video chat app that's in the PlayBook to BBM in smartphones.

    Thanks.

To get iOS 5 you need to be part of Apple's dev program. There is a work around hack going around online, but many don't recommend it as it has the possible chance to brick your iPhone or iPod Touch. Here is some better information here... http://talkbinary.com/how-to/how-to-...loper-account/

Thanks Joe! Once I get my iPod (if it releases in September), I'll take a look at getting iOS5.
Good job, and looking forward to more of these reviews in the future!
