Sorry rafdina, I was mobile when you asked this question and I guess my message didn't get sent.
There is no need to wipe a device that is OS6 or above unless you want to, or you run into problems during the upgrade. You should be able to install it per the instructions in All In One Guide - How To Upgrade Your Device - with Pictures & Videos

Thank you so much with your reply ghostryder. I have gone through the thread you have mentioned above. The instruction asked us to wipe the data. However, it did mention that OS 6 and 7 did not need a total wipe. In this case, can I install the new software normally (i.e. click on apploader and install as usual).

That is correct. I discovered that OS6 and higher devices did not need the total wipe because I was experimenting with an OS upgrade on my OS6 Torch 9800. So yes, click on apploader and install as usual.

Very explicit and lucid. The only thing preventing me from upgrading is fear!

My problem is this, the BBSAK just doesn't see my device. I've tried so many times to remove the USB to it still doesn't see it. I really want to wipe the phone cos it's got a lot of issues like phenomenal battery drain, bootup that takes forever and oh my favorite, the phone getting hot. So advice would really help

After plugging in your BlackBerry,Open Task Manager and end a process called " BBDevMgr.exe "
Then run BBSAK and all things should work properly and BBSAK should detect your device.
