Thread: Cannot back-up 3rd party apps

hello all.

i just had my storm replaced not what i wanted to do but i had to.
now when i try to back up 3 rd party apps it comes up with a fatal error code on dm. also widows media player doesn't see my phone. With old storm i had 2 windows that popped up so i could access media card and phone memory. With new one i cannot. i do have mass media enabled and dm recognises my phone. i am sure it is a setting somewhere but i just cannot find it. any help will be appreciated. Thank you

Hello tevansny and welcome to BBOS.

When you have your new device synced up to your PC ond you open the My Computer Screen, do you not see the two Removable Disk Drives?

Tevansny , do you happen to have the old storm as well? did verizon mail you a replacement, or you got it done in store? If you have the old and the new you could always do the device switch wizard through DM and it will transfer your 3rd party applications over to the new device, as well as all contacts and settings.

This is true dream yet if the PC won't recognize the new device then the device switch feature may be a moot point. I'd like to see if the PC is even seeing the new device first.

This is true, what I was getting from the post is that the phone wasnt popping up as a media source, like that window where you can open media with..etc.

i recieved phone at local store and he insisted on switching my contacts.
the computer does not recognise phone as media source.

If you plug the phone in, does your Desktop Manager recognize it?

Also, if you go to your control panel then system then hardware, then device manager and you click the box for the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, do you have any with any symbols next to it?

Let's look at a couple of things.....
First let's look at reinstalling the USB drivers for that device.

On your desktop right-click My Computer. Scroll down and select Properties. Now select the Hardware tab. Next select Device Manager. From this tree scroll to the bottom of the list and you should see the USB controllers. Expand this and see if you have a heading labled Blackberry smart phone. If not then we need to try this.

I can email you this .rar. I would need you to PM and give me a valid email address.

So download the file BB storage Activation new.rar. It will be a zip so after the download is complete extract the files.There will be three files in the extraction. One of these files will be a .bat extension. So from this point connect your device to your PC then double click the .bat file and a DOS cmd window will pop up. Press any key when prompted to then wait for your device to completely reboot.

So as your device is rebooting your PC should recognize the device once your splash screen boots on the BB. If it does not simply unplug then plug the BB in again and see if the PC recognizes your device.

ok under usb controllers i see blackberry smartphone. i click that and it says device working properly under general tab. What do you think ?

now with phone not hooked to computer blackberry smartphone is not there under usb controllers. if that makes difference.

So at this point right click the Blackberry Smartphone heading and uninstall the driver. Once this is done I beilive your PC will want to re boot. If it dose not, it's ok. Now unplug the device from the PC and plug it in again.

Ok i deleted device driver. reconnected phone. it updated driver through windows update.

i still do not see device in my computer. still will not back up 3rd party apps. and still cannot swap files in dm media. . can we try anything else ?

Do you by any chance have another computer there that you can plug the device into, or try another USB port of the same computer and see if it them will recognize the media.

And uber silly question, but i did it once, when you got your new phone, you remembered to take the card out of the old one correct?

We can try my second option if you like. This new device may have an issue with the activation of the mass media mode.

sure. hopefully not too techinacal. i am basically computer illerate....lol.
