Top 5 BlackBerry Smartphone Phone App Tips

I find that most BlackBerry users don't know that they can utilize their native phone app as more than just using it as a keypad to dial out numbers, view your call history, or add a contact. While these are the most important features, many more are available to help you make navigating and using the phone app that much more enjoyable. I gathered these tips up from the InsideBB help blog, and I'm sure you'll find them useful.

    1. Create a phone Call Log Note

Just had a brainstorming session with a client and need to remember what was discussed during the call? Considering adding a note to the Call Log. If you aren’t familiar with Call Logs find out more by reading our blog post on how to customize BlackBerry smartphone Call Logs. To add information to a Call Log by adding a note, complete these steps:
    1. From the Home screen, press the Send key, then highlight a Call Log
    2. Press the Menu key, select “View”, followed by “History”
    3. Highlight a Call Log, press the Menu key and select “Add Notes”
    4. Press the Menu key and select “Save”.

    2. Have your voice mail password entered automatically

At work I keep my BlackBerry smartphone sound profile on “Silent” because I don’t want to interrupt meetings or bother people around my desk; however, this can result in missed calls. To access my messages quickly, I have my voice mail password automatically entered when I access my mailbox. If you aren’t sure how to access your voice mail or to inquire about setting up your voice mail, contact your wireless service provider for more information.
    BlackBerry® 6 & BlackBerry® 7 OS
    1. From the Home screen, press the Send key
    2. Press the Menu key, select “Options” followed by “Voice Mail”
    3. Select the checkbox next to Automatically enter password
    4. Enter the password, press the Menu key and select “Save”.
BlackBerry® Device Software 5.0 and below
    1. From the Home screen, press the Send key
    2. Press the Menu key, and select “Options”
    3. Select “Voice Mail” and enter your password
    4. Press the Menu key and select “Save”

    3. Use Call Forwarding

I often use this feature when I travel to a friend’s cottage since they have wireless service, but their cottage also has a landline. With their permission, I forward any incoming phone calls to my BlackBerry smartphone to the cottage’s landline. Before attempting to use call forwarding, I recommend contacting your wireless service provider to ensure that this feature is supported by your service plan.
    BlackBerry 6 & BlackBerry 7
    1. From the Home screen, press the Send key
    2. Press the Menu key and select “Options”, followed by “Call Forwarding”
    3. Next to Forward Calls choose “Always” or “Customize”
    4. When finished, press the Menu key and select “Save”.
BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 and below
    1. From the Home screen, press the Send key
    2. Press the Menu key and select “Options”, followed by “Call Forwarding”
    3. Next to Forward Calls choose “Always” or “Conditional”
    4. When Finished, press the Menu Key and select “Save”.

    4. Allow outgoing calls while the screen is locked

By default, when you set a password on a BlackBerry smartphone, you are not able to make outgoing calls when the device is locked. If you would like to be able to make calls, follow these steps.
    BlackBerry 6 & BlackBerry 7
    1. From the Home screen or from within a folder select “Options”
    2. Select “Security”, followed by “Password”
    3. Select the checkbox next to Allow Outgoing Calls While Locked
    4. Press the Menu key and select “Save”.
BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 and below
    1. From the Home screen or from within a folder select “Options”, followed by “Password”
    2. Select “yes” from the drop down next to Allow Outgoing Calls While Locked
    3. Press the Menu key and select “Save”.

    5. View the recent history of a contact

To view recent phone call history and other types of conversations (such as text messages) with a specific contact, simply select the contact from within the Contacts app and then view the entries under Recent Activity.

Here are a few more tips I found online:

Note: The tips below apply to BlackBerry smartphones with a QWERTY keyboard, such as the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900. To learn more about using the Phone app if you are using a touch screen-only BlackBerry smartphone (such as the BlackBerry® Torch™ 9850/9860 smartphone), please review the user guide for your BlackBerry smartphone.

    Dial Letters

The next time you come across a phone number that contains a word or letters, you can have your BlackBerry smartphone enter the corresponding numbers automatically so you don’t have to try to figure out what numbers you need to enter. All you need to do is specify the first part of the phone number – for example, 1-800 – and when you need to enter a letter, hold down the “ALT” key and enter the letters or words contained in the phone number.

    Volume Controls

When using the BlackBerry smartphone handset, you have a few options that can help improve sound quality during a call. To enhance call audio while on a call, press the Menu key and select “Enhance Call Audio”. You can then select “Boost Bass” or “Boost Treble” to help improve the sound quality of your current call. (Note: Sound quality settings do not apply to Bluetooth®-enabled headsets.) You also have the ability to improve sound quality for all calls; to do this, complete the following steps:

Press the Phone key or select the Phone app from the home screen
Press the Menu key, then select “Options” followed by “In-call Settings”
Within Audio Enhancement, specify your desired values.
Tip: You can also specify the default call volume as well within this screen. F or example, if you find yourself constantly turning the volume up whenever you make or receive a call you can set your BlackBerry smartphone to use the same volume level as previous calls which is my preferred setting or a specific volume level such as 75%.

    Speed Dial

You can quickly dial a specific contact or your voice mail using speed dial shortcuts on your BlackBerry smartphone. Here’s a quick overview of how to manage the speed dial list:

    1. Press the Phone key or select the Phone app from the home screen
    2. Press the Menu key, then select “View” followed by “Speed Dial List”
    3. Highlight a contact or phone number
    4. Press the Menu key and select one of the following options:

To add a new contact, highlight the speed dial key, press the Menu key and select “New Speed Dial”
To change the contact that is assigned to a speed dial key, highlight the speed dial key, select “Edit” and select the new contact
To assign the contact to a different speed dial key, highlight the speed dial key, press the Menu key and select “Move” followed by picking the new speed dial key
To delete a contact from the Speed Dial Numbers list, highlight the speed dial entry, press the Menu key and select “Delete”.
    Auto Dial Extensions

If you frequently use extensions, you can add them to a contacts phone number in the Address Book. The next time you contact someone from your Address book that has an extension specified, the extension will be entered automatically after the call is placed. To take advantage of this feature, open the Address Book, edit a contact, and add a pause or wait after the phone number followed by the extension you need to enter. Here’s how to add a pause or wait to a phone number that’s contained in your Address Book:

Open a contact, then select a phone number and scroll to the end
Press the Menu key and select “Add Pause” or “Add Wait”
Type the additional numbers of the extension
Press the Menu key and select “Save”.

Great tips! I must admit that I really don't utilize most of the amazing features of my Bold. I only recently started using "q" to quickly switch profiles! Thanks Joe!
