The US Army has put a smackdown on e-mail aggregators, so no more AKO e-mail for military guys via the Blackberry aggregator. My question is...does anyone know how to use IMAP settings for e-mail? IMAP is allowed by the Army, but I don't know of any program for blackberry that can use IMAP.

i'm sorry I don't know anything about IMAP but I have a suggestion for you;
if your on a bis you can go to your carriers bis site and set up a direct to your berry email.
if you google say vzw + bis and set up an account from there you can create an email
something like username@verizon.blackberry.net

I tried setting up without password, but it keeps asking for one. It looks like I need a different e-mail program, such as Outlook, actually on my Storm to do this.:angryfire:

Sorry Pork I am little confused by your question. Are you trying set up an additional IMAP account or your trying to get email from IMAP forward to your .mil account? Can you explain a little better to help you with this.

I am trying to access my .mil account on my storm. The only "approved" method involves IMAP. It appears I need an IMAP mail client installed on my Storm to do this.

Pork you do not need a special IMAP mail client. Your .mil account should already be IMAP ready. For example, Gmail is imap.gmail.com because that is their incoming server name.
Do you the settings for you .mil account. I mean is it on BIS account that you can access through your PC. If so the process is quite easy. Let us know.

Yes I have the settings and it uses ssl.

That's fine, were you using POP before that. I mean did your server name look like pop.XXXX/mil
If so just change it to imap.XXXX.mil
Your outgoing server name will not change only your incoming one.

That's it...I give! Been on the phone for 20min waiting for someone to pick up. Then went to the BIS site via the Storm and got to the e-mail settings. It will only let me change the incoming server. I can't change designation from POP3 to IMAP and I can't change the port number. Maybe I have to wait for Uncle Sam to actually cut off the service on the 24th before I can use IMAP?:dunno:

Try calling vzw later in the evening you should be able to get through more quickly.

Here is an excerpt from what started this:
Results of a recent security audit have identified you as using POP or IMAP
to receive your AKO e-mail through a mail aggregator system such as Google
mail, Blackberry, or Team ON.
This action not only creates a security risk but also sets the conditions
for a possible compromise of your AKO username and password credentials.
Army regulations (AR 25-2 para 4-5a8) prohibit auto forwarding of official
mail to non official accounts and from providing your AKO credentials to
unauthorized individuals.
To prevent this risk, and mitigate the potential for a possible compromise
of AKO user credentials, on June 24, 2009 AKO will be blocking access to
POP/IMAP from these types of sites.
You may still use webmail (webmail.us.army.mil) or IMAP via a client such
as Outlook, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird to retrieve your mail.
