Step By Step on Shrink A OS

OK so today I am going to give you a step by step on Shrink A OS by Lyricidial. The basics of this program are simply it lets you delete any unused applications that come pre installed on the blackberry to help free up device memory. This program can be used before installing the OS (which is what I prefer) or after the OS is already installed if you want. Remember what ever applications you delete off your blackberry with Shrink will not show up in app loader at all. So this means that if you delete BB Maps (for example) but decided you want it on your phone at a later date. You will not be able to go through app loader to re install, as it won't even show on your list. Luckily Shrink comes with a nice feature called Put it Back :) You can click this button to re install all the applications that your originally deleted. OK so now on to the walk through :)

First in order for Shrink A OS to work properly you will need to do the following:

Have WinRaR installed on your PC, click Here to download (this is the zip program that Shrink comes in)
Have Net Framework 3.5 installed on your PC, click Here to download
Have Shrink A OS downloaded on your PC click Here to download

After you download Shrink A OS double click the zip folder and highlight the shrink .exe and drag to your desktop

Once you have extracted the .exe to your desktop double click to open (if you are on Vista you will need to right click on the icon and choose run as administrator before you open). Now once open click the browse button and browse to your OS folder you want to shrink. This is located for most at C>Program Files>Common Files>Research In Motion>Shared>Loader>your current OS folder. Now highlight the entire OS folder and choose OK

No choose what applications you would like to remove from the OS folder. Once you have made all your selections click the shrink my OS button. You will then get a confirmation message that your OS has been shrunk

Now click the launch loader.exe button (at this point make sure your phone is plugged into your PC), and you will see the app loader start. Notice any application you shrunk will not be listed in app loader.

Now let the OS load on your phone and you are officially done :)

Can you provide us with a detailed procedure for using Shrink-A-OS with BBC V7+? I realize you suggested browsing System, but I looked at System on the phone (both internal and media card) and did not find anything that would be changed/shrunk. It is not clear to me where Shrink is applied and how the changes are applied, especially since you have to install 132/148 V7+ first then come back and apply Shrink and do ??? to complete the process.

Hey Phred :)

What you need to do is install the OS you want to your PC first so in your case install .148 OS to pc then install V7 over that. Then run shrink and browser to your OS folder on the PC ( c>program files>common files>research in motion>shared>loader--then highlight your OS folder in that


then choose the options you want to shrink off your phone and when you are finished then click the launch loader button on shrink. That will initiate your OS install to your phone.

I can give you a hand where are you in the process?

what os are you running now?
have you d/l a fresh copy of the new os you want to use?

smcoldbb - Downloaded and installed 132, save the 132 radio file, downloaded and installed BBC V7.1.2, copied the 132 radio file to V7+, wiped my phone, and used Loader to upgrade the phone. Have done my 3 battery pulls and have been running 132 V7+ on my phone for a couple of days.

Certainly would like to regain some of the memory by shrinking the OS. That is where I am.

Per Bryan, sounds like I need to run Shrink against the 132 V7+ installation directory and launch Loader from Shrink. And, I may have to run Shrink a second time to get things to work, if I do not see a memory increase after the first time.

Do I have that right?

Sounds good :) if you already have the OS on your phone then yes run shrink against the OS folder on your PC then launch loader. It will then show a loading screen, but should start saying removing "blank" whatever you chose to remove off. Doing it against an OS already installed on the phone you might have to do it twice. But yep sounds good to me

yes that sounds right. shrink a os must be done B4 you load onto your phone.

I will mention that bbcrackman recommends that we NOT shrink these os's

SM that is incorrect :) you can run shrink on an already installed OS if you wish

you basically reloading it on the phone aren't you. running apploader?

Once you make your selecting on shrink and run loader it will just removed the files that you have selected. Basically the same as unchecking BB maps in app loader (for an example)

No you don't :) usually the one that loader does after it removes the files is good enough from what I have noticed. Since you are only removing files and not loading the OS
