    How to unlock your BlackBerry

First I feel I should explain why you would need to unlock your BlackBerry. Unlocking your BlackBerry is basically saying that you have unlocked the locking restriction of your SIM Card. Every phone that is purchased from a carrier is locked to that carrier. This means that your phone will only accept this carrier's SIM Card. So if you are using AT&T in the USA, you travel to the UK, and wish to put a Vodafone SIM Card in your phone, you wouldn't be able to until your phone is unlocked.

So, now that we have established why you would unlock a phone let's figure out how...

The first thing you will need in order to unlock your phone is an unlock code. These codes can be purchased from several different companies and soon will be available on BlackBerryandBeyond. You will need to know your IMEI number for your BB. To get this go to Options, Status. The IMEI may also be found on the white sticker under the battery (sometimes hard to read--make sure you read it right!).

In certain situations carriers have been known to give out Unlock Codes for free, however this is not often and usually takes weeks to obtain the codes. Some have policies that vary from having an active account in good-standing (good payment history) to having been a customer for 90 days or more. In my opinion its easier and quicker to just purchase the code and enter it yourself. The cost is minimal and It's worth not to have to deal with the carriers and waiting the time.

Unlock codes are particular to each BlackBerry and cannot be used more that once or for different BlackBerry's. Do not purchase your unlock code from a friend who has one and says the code was for his BB. Unlock codes can take anywhere from 4 hours to 10 days to obtain. Some BlackBerrys simply can't be unlocked for various reasons: The IMEI number cannot be found in the RIM database, or the device was a pre-release, not-to-be-sold device.

Now that you have your Unlock Code, you will need to follow these steps:
NOTE: Make sure you follow these or the instructions offered with your unlock code correctly. If you enter the unlock code incorrectly five times, the device will permanently lock to the carrier to which it is branded. Thus, making the device permanently unlockable...

You must have a SIM card in your phone to complete these steps (Can be active or inactive it does not matter)

Let me add my two cents and get your opinion. I have used FreeMyBlackBerry.com. I got my code in less than two hours and was not required to pay. They do ask for donations but payment is not required for the unlock code.
I've directed others to this site and have not heard of a bad experience.

Just want to add, after unlocking your Blackberry you will be able to use any GSM sim card of any carrier. But, to get Services such as BBM / MMS / BIS to work you must have a Blackberry data plan activated and also you need update the service books that will work for your carrier on your unlocked Blackberry device.

I just tried looking for instructions for my 9800 Torch, and they did not have that information.

So if anyone else wants their BlackBerry unlocked for free, go to FreeMyBlackBerry.com. They will email you the unlocking code with step by step instructions as well within 24 hours or less.
I received my code and instructions in less than 2 hours.
