Sunday Funday: WordRival and Fightin' Words (Scrabble-Like Games)

Today on Sunday Funday we are having a head to head for Scrabble-Like games on BlackBerry. The most common of these style games would be 'Words with Friends'. Unfortunately, for BlackBerry users, Words with Friends only works on Android and iPhone. We do not know of any future plans for Words with Friends, but hopefully it will come to BlackBerry soon. So we are going to take a look at some very good BlackBerry substitutes.

    WordRival vs Fightin' Words

We will be looking into the different games and taking them about, using the Funday Scale to see which game will out rank of other. First we will take a look at Fightin' Words, then we will check out WordRival and then I am going to some up both games with the Funday chart. Well, enough chit chat... Lets get down to business.

    Fightin' Words:
Using a username based system you can log in with your usersname and freely challenge your friends to a Scrabble-Like game of Fightin' Words. All you need is their username and you are set.

The game has a basic scrabble feel and you can play word vertically or horizontally. When playing your words you also have the option of landing on letter or word bonuses, just like you would in a true scrabble game. Along with some of these features, Fightin' words have put in a POW tile, that can be used as any letter or replace another letter.

When you are playing Fightin' words you have several ways to play the game. You have the ability to play a friend off your friends list, start a game with someone not on your list (you need their username) or just start a random game against a random person. This can be a fun way to meet new players, yet sometimes it takes a few minutes (or more) to find a game.

One of the cons to this game is the hourglass. As you can see in the photo above I would constantly see the hourglass loading icon while simply navigating the game to take screenshots.

Another negative would be the ability to play offline. In Fightin' Words, there is no way to play the game if you have no internet connection. Also, you can only play with people online via multiplayer system.

One very big positive about the game, is something that is not even part of the game play. That is the intro menu. When the game first loads you will see an explanation of how to play (seen above). I think it is a great first impression when you load the game, and a great way to explain the game to new players.

Overall, this game is a fun and addicting game. Its graphics could be better, and the game needs to flow better, too many hourglass popups. It is also hard to find people that play this game. When I mention Fightin' Words, I have often received this response: "I dont play Fightin' Words, I play WordRival."

    WordRival

This is one of those games that just has everything going for it. It is a fun, addicting, easy to use game that has no issues with speed, or the dreaded hourglass.

The game has a great UI, and is very clean. The color scheme is nicer than Fightin' Words, and has a more professional look to it. Fightin' Words, in my opinion, has a more childish color theme. As you can see in the images above you can have multiple games going at one time, just like in Fightin' Words.

One of the great features of WordRival is the Chat program. All you need to do is hit your BlackBerry button, and then click on chat. Once in the chat room, just type, and send your message. This is a very essential part of the game, this is where one can brag about big words, and big points. When I am playing against my wife, I am constantly in the chat bragging, lol!

Another great feature of this game has got to be the Notifications. WordRival uses BlackBerry's wonderful push notification system for both game play, and chatting. Whenever you have a new chat, or it is your turn to play, you will notice a W in your notification bar. Once you open your game, you will see if its your turn, or you have an active chat you need to read.

Lastly, I would like to comment on Aztux Ltd, the makers of WordRival, they are really good at coming out with new updates. Every update seems to fix more and more bugs, and add newer cool features. Since I have had Fightin' Words and WordRival (Mid May), Fightin' Words has been updated once, and WordRival have been updated about 10 times. That says something!

    The Match Up:

Now that you have heard what I have to say, it is time for the match up. I will be rating each app on my weekly Funday Scale, however, this week I will be adding an additional rating. I will be adding a category for Multiplayer Experience. Seeing as both of these games are based on a multiplayer system, it only makes sense to judge that aspect of the game.

So in the end the winner is, WordRival!!!
Both games are great, and you are free to chose which is your favorite, however the Funday Scale has chosen WordRival as its victor.

If you have either of these games, let us know what you think!!!
Leave your username below, and I will challenge you to a game! (WordRival Only)

If you would like more info on these games or would like to buy either of them, please check them out in the BlackBerryOS Store.
