Well here we are. Its Sunday the 3rd and it is a great weekend to start the all new "Sunday Funday" column. Starting today, every sunday you will see me review a BlackBerry Game. These games will be rating on a Sunday Funday rating systems that will be explained below. Make sure that you are reading my column each and every Sunday because I will most likely be giving away free copies of the game I am reviewing. Today's game is The Deadliest Catch.
The Deadliest Catch is a long-running (in its 7th season and counting) Reality TV show on The Discovery Channel that follows crews of fishermen during their two seasons on the rough Bering Sea seeking a valuable commodity — the enormous red king crab around October, and the opilio or snow crab around January. It is repeatedly stated that this is the "deadliest job in the world", and tragedy does occur, such as the sinking of other ships, as well as serious injuries and near-fatal accidents on the featured boats. The opilio season is particularly dangerous due to the extremely icy weather conditions.
Well, now you can play The Deadliest Catch on your BlackBerry. Short of being on the boat with Sig Hansen, you are right in the action. Dropping pots, throwing the flaming hook, pulling pots and even sorting crab at the sorting station. You are even able to drive the boat and chose your favorite crab grounds to fish in, however beware of the weather.
When you first start the game up you will see the season and type of crab that you are fishing for. At this point you are still at the dock, pots are on the boat and you need to gear up and cast off. The first thing you will want to do is chose your crew and bait. But, dont forget to see if you can afford an upgrade or two, then you are ready to set sail.
This is a very cool part of the game. Each time you are at the dock you can choose to upgrade your crew (Fire or Hire Crew Members), upgrade your boat (Buy new parts) and buy your bait. You can even enter in a Captains contest for the best season string. This part of the game gets a solid 5 stars from me. Its very kool to set up your boat before you go fishing.
The next step in you adventure is based on where to fish. If you pick the wrong spot you can end up with empty pots and an empty tank. Keep in mind that you only have a limited amount of time before the season deadline is over. You need to fill your tanks and get back to the dock. If you fill them early you will save money on fuel and bait. This means you will earn more profit and your crew will have more money in their pockets. Start the game by picking a section of the Barring Seas where you would like to fish, then once you are in that section you will need to move your boat into grab rich waters. Once you lay your prospect strings, slide over to another crab grounds and lay some more.
This part of the game is very cool too. You are out on the grounds hunting for the crab, trying to find the hot spots and avoid the empty pots. As a fishermen myself, this is a very intriguing and interesting part of the game for me. They say fishing is 70% waiting and 20% work and 10% fun (Catching)... Its TRUE!!! This section of the game gets two rating from me. 5 Stars for its content and addictiveness, but 3 stars for its difficulty. To me, it seems too easy to land on the crab. Its almost like the game has toooo much crab in it. On the show, I have seem boats pull up completely empty pots with only bait in the pots. I have never seen this in the BlackBerry game.
So now that your pots have been soaking, its time to pull them out of the water. The first pot of the season if your flaming hook. Dont miss!!! Once you have hooked the pot you will need to place the rope in the winch and pull up the pot. Hopefully you are on the crab and your pot is full! After your pot is pulled you will need to head to the sorting table and sort your crab. Once you have completely pulled and sort the first pot of your string the game will auto pull the remain pots in that string and let you know your strings best pot and average pot numbers. At that point you need to make the tough decision each crab captain makes. Should you reset your pots or steam to a new fishing ground?
Its part of the game is kinda cheesy if you ask me. Its fun, but the graphics are kinda lame and make it cheesy. There is not much to say about this part of the game other than 4.5 stars for fun and 3 for cheesy graphics.
So that is pretty much the game in a nut shell. Do you think you have what it takes to fish the barring sea? I have seen many fishermen fail on the show, but can you hack it in the game? Make sure to download this game and experience crabbing on your BlackBerry.
My only tip would be this: Make sure to always manually exit the game after playing. The one and only flaw in this game would be CPU power usage. Below is a picture from my 9800 Torch, I left the game and went to options with out closing the game, look how much CPU it is using.

This game is most certainly worth the $1.99 in BlackBerry Appworld. Once you have played the game, make sure to let us know what you think, and if you liked the review posted on Sunday Funday.
If you would like to make a suggestion for a future Sunday Funday Game Review please email me at TheOnlyJrod@BlackBerryOS.com, I will be happy to download and review a game of your choice. If you are a developer and would like your game demo'd, you may email me as well.
Till next week,
