Questions about a curve 8330

Let me first start by saying that I am currently running 2 9530 Storm devices and these handsets happen to be the first BB’s I’ve ever owned. Having said that…..I’m eating at the local diner(WH) in the early morning hours like I do most mornings before going to work. One of the locals(employee) has a new BB 8330. She’s very excited about it and notices that I have my Storm. She starts asking me about different functions and I’m filling in the blanks for her. Not to mention I suggest that she visit BlackberryOS.com for more enlightening conversation about BB’s. Nevertheless…She’s addicted to her BB and she ask’s me about how to modify the ringtone for SMS and MMS incoming alerts. Now me being a Storm owner it was very easy to say do this………and as I’m suggesting to her, she says I don’t have that selection. The selection we have on the Storm is Message Alerts. From here I can customize and message alert I like. She hands me her curve and as I expect, navigating through this device is similar to the Storm. I could not find any functions that would allow me to modify the alerts.
Another thing I immediately looked at was the OS. It read v4.5.0.77 and she is with VZW. Kind of looks old to me. She’s only had this for 1 week
Last but not least. I’m confident in my capabilities of upgrading OS’s. I have both 4.7 and 5.0 beta installed on different PC’s that I have. As others do, I use the Loader.exe rather than DM to install OS’s. Can I use the DM’s that I currently use to backup a curve handset? If not, any information would be greatly appreciated.

yes you can use the same DM for upgrading the curve...would suggest not to use .160 very buggy. For the ringtones you need to go sound profiles>bbkey>advanced> edit. you can set a custom ringer for someone by going contacts>find person>bbkey>edit>add cust.ring

now unlike the storm you can only do the phone call not sms/mms from that person hope this helps

Yes jnepsa...That funtion seems to be good for modifying an individual contact. That seem to be working ok. The ? is about modifying an incoming SMS or MMS alert. Then again if that contact is sending you a text, will that custom profile take over for the ringtone?

Which OS would be the most stable?

The device is an 8330 Pink Curve from VZW. I've kind of been looking at the OS threads for the curve here on BBOS and it looks like there are several variations to choose from. Maybe I can get an explanation about the mutilanguage.

sound profiles>bbkey>advanced> edit will let you create the custom profile and you can change the mms/sms/email/bbm/phone all those will be there and you will name it. and no the ringtone for that contact will only play as phone call, your custom profile sms ringer will play if that same person would text you am I making any sense?

sometimes I know what I mean i just cant say it right hahaha

umm I would say try .138 isnt bad, but bbcm said something about maybe working on a hybrid and then you know what I will have the wife sporting :)

If you load .138 on a VZW 8330 the first time you update your PRL your RF will probably go nuts.

It's a known issue with .138 and the VZW 8330 radio and the onscreen call timer is missing.

Same problem with .160 except for the call timer being back, .160 also has a loud chirp or squelch during a call for some VZW users as well.

Your best bet would probably be .131.

Great info blackngray.
I tend to do that after every upgrade. I can recall upgrading my 9530 on I think it was .132 and if you updated the PRL....Loss of Data.....Only way to get it back was to bat pull.

So to update all that helped me with the Curve....Thank you....We were able to get the custom profile to work for the SMS/MMS tones. We may have a new member before to long. I said if you need to know anything else about the device just come in and introduce yourself and the rest will fall into place..... Thanks again..
