Error mesage, lagging - I need help!

I have a blackberry bold 9780 issued from T Mobile. The other day I performed a reboot and upon start up I noticed that I could not open my text messages, Gchat, etc. I received the following error: net_rim_bb_messaging_app not responding.

After a few minutes, the texts will actually open but the entire phone will lag constantly. I get the spinning death wheel over and over again. I have deleted many apps to try to and find the culprit, but I fear a reset to factory settings may be necessary. Is there any advice on what to do about this??

Have you performed a battery pull?

Several of them. I even left the battery out over night to be sure.

One interesting note: I work in an area where I have zero service, so I turn off the network to save battery. When this is the case, the phone performs just fine. Makes me think the issue is related to the phone communicating with the network, but I don't know enough about this to be sure.

Have you tried to update your OS? There may be a fix for that in the latest release.

I haven't been prompted to updated since around May. Where do I go to check for updates in the OS? Somewhere under settings?
