There is a great app called Tether for BlackBerry which allows you to connect to the internet on your computer via your phone. The app is a bit pricey at $50, but does go on sale all the time at 50% off. Here is the link to the app so you can keep an eye when it goes on sale next... Lol...dongle
Back on topic...yeah you could use Tether. I've never used it personally but I've heard that its a great app. The only thing that would hold me back from using it is that the connection speed on non-3G networks (and even sometimes 3G networks) wouldn't be as fast as a regular modem. I guess you could use it for casual surfing, but games would definitely be a no-no.
Good Luck!
I think that if he had a modem he would use it
For outdoors it's good option, why get an additional dongle or something when you can hook up your BB and surf?
Let's see what he want's to do and base our help on that info. For all we know he just want's to read online newspapers or something.
Please check with you provider how unlimited your Internet is and if they check for tethering, some can cut you off or charge extra costs.
you can use bb as a modem by connecting the usb cable to your pc. run the bb desktop sofware and configure the mobile internet setting under tools. Ask your provider about the APN, username and Password.
If you are using AT&T as a provider, you will be charged extra when tethering. I don't agree with paying for something twice that I pay for though, so I don't tether.

.. use a thing called impatica... it actually projects your bb to your PC and you can still browse using the blackberry through your PC.. even send emails and chat using bbm using your PC's keyboard...
hey
i´m new here and have a similar problem:
I want to use my BB as modem. But I want to use it as 'real' modem. so i dont only want to take advatage of mobile internet, also i want to be able interact with the bare GSM network.
the reason is (even if actually doesn't matter, but there is always someone who asks) is I want to use nowsms but i dont want to buy a GSM modem.
