When I created a new folder I was able to select the folder icon among a select predefined icons. Is there a way that I can create my own icons and use them for the created folder?

Not that I am aware of. I believe you would have to create your own Theme to have whatever custom folders you want but I could be wrong. L.E.D. would be the perfect person to ask for this maybe he will chime in...
