    Golfers: PinPointGPS app for BlackBerry

Golfing enthusiasts have scored a hole-in-one after turning wayward shots into a potential money-spinner.

Leyland businessman Stephen Ward and friend, Peter Rackham, an experienced IT professional, have launched mobile phone software which uses GPS to work out where you are on the course.

It will be interesting to see how well it works. I use a SkyCaddie and they are really helpful in club selection etc. The company actually sends a man out to each course with a backpack containing sophisticated GPS equiptment. They mark all the hazards and sandtraps etc. distance to the trap, distance to clear etc. For the greens they walk the perimeter and input that data so even if you screwed up a shot and are hitting into the green from another fairway (it happens) it shows you an outline of the green from your position.
A few courses will not allow them to map (Augusta, Riviera etc.) but you can program the SkyCaddie yourself by entering the front, middle and back of the green and the SkyCaddie retains those GPS numbers for your next round. It is not as helpful as having all the bunkers etc. Once you program your home course, you can upload it so others may use it. I looked and it seems they only have a few courses mapped at present.
I doubt if they will have the $ resources to actually map individual places, but if enough golfers were able to program them and upload their results it would be great.
The SkyCaddie has the ability to reset itself for the next hole when you get on the green so it is pretty foolproof.
