MaxMem: A BerryCoder Memory Management Utility Applicatoin
MaxMem is a free memory management utility created by BerryCoder. MaxMem frees up memory on a device by deleting preinstalled COD files that are unused by the Blackberry Operating System. At the time of this post the latest release version of this application is 0.4, and there are currently 10 different remove modules. By using each one of the modules, the user can expect to have at maximum 5mb’s of memory freed up by MaxMem. The application is not hap hazardous and there are pop up notifications for each file that is to be deleted, making it near impossible to inadvertently delete a file. The pop up warnings are very necessary since any file unintentionally deleted could have catastrophic effects.
Below is a list of the 10 different delete modules and a short summary of what each one is:
Remove VAD: Removes the COD files associated with Voice Activation Dialing.
Remove PTT: Removes the files associated with Push to Talk. This feature is only available on AT&T and Sprint/Nextel.
Remove T-Mo Fives: Removes COD’s related to T-Mobile’s Fave Fives. The file usually consists of an icon.
Remove MDS: Removes files related to Mobile Data Services. MDS is only used by BES users.
Remove Media: Deletes media such as default music, photos, and wallpapers.
Remove Default Themes: Deletes the theme or themes that come preloaded on the device.
Remove TID: Removes linguistic data used by Spell check, Suretype, and the likes. This is an experimental feature.
Remove Foreign Resources: Deletes language translation. Another experimental feature.
Remove Ringtones: Removes Ringtones. Both default and user installed.
Remove RIM Internal Tools: Deletes quincy, bug report, battery log, and so on. These tools usually come in a package with a beta operating system. RIM uses these tools to monitor the OS performance remotely. The user should delete this if they are not officially approved to use the beta OS.
There is a user’s guide located here. But for a quick summary after you install MaxMem, first make sure to backup the device data. Run the application and select the modules you wish to delete. Then there will be a series of questions the user must answer to proceed with the COD deletion. When one is finished with deleting all the necessary modules reboot the device.
MaxMem is a highly useful memory management utility. It is a great way to free up some memory on a Blackberry and will get rid of unnecessary and unwanted files. However, this application, if not used careful, can cause major malfunctions if not used correctly. Therefore the user should be well versed with backup and restore procedures, and it should only be used if the user is very comfortable with these types of procedures. This is to avoid any avoidable headaches and aggravation. BerryCoder states they are not responsible for any mishaps a user may encounter. THEREFORE USE WITH CAUTION!
