Thread: Socialscope-5min review

Finally got an invite code for Socialscope so I installed it last night to see how it would compare to Ubertwitter and Facebook (thought maybe I could replace those two apps and save a little memory).

Program installed - check
Setup logins - check
Check stats on phone - battery 45%/memory 30mb

Device acting extremely sluggish and after attempting to go into my emails and seeing no response, realized the device was frozen.

On reboot, deleted Socialscope.

It may be the cat's meow for someone, and I know it's in alpha, but it fried my phone and for someone that uses twitter mainly to receive info (as opposed to post), I'll stick w. Uber and give SS the thumbs down.

snmemx , did you change your refresh settings for the SS application? By default the application is set to automatically refresh, so it will be constantly refreshing in the background. I made the same mistake when I first got my SS invite. I have since changed it to never refresh, which makes it only refresh when I go to the application and open it.

Thanks! I wasn't sure where to put it but figured after all the help I've gotten from the BBOS community, the least I could do was add some cursory feedback on what I'd heard was a phenomenal app.

Feedback of all sorts is welcomed.

Check out my post above, and change how often it will refresh itself, and you should see a lot of improvement. I know I sure did.

I reset it to 30min after the initial install had it running on automatic (I set it to 30min b/c that's what I have Uber set on and I wanted to compare them side-by-side). Even after that change, I still noticed a significant jump in latency when I'd hit icons/swap between programs.

I can see where SS will be great for heavy twitter/FB users as it aggregates the content from the two. I was hoping it would work b/c it looks like w. SS I could do a search in twitter and save it as a tab. But I really didn't like the fact that even when I exited out of the app, it still showed as running, and when the device reset, it automatically started (maybe there's a setting somewhere that can disable auto-start...I know there is in Uber...but I couldn't find it).

The killer was when it froze my device...I'll be patient if it slows things down a bit, but from the things popping on my screen when it froze, it was obvious that something was very screwed up in memory...that I can't handle.

If someone has info about the memory/battery comps of SS vs Uber, I'd be happy to re-install it and give it another whirl, but for the time being, I think I'll have to leave my invite code unused.

Out of curiousity, did you still have Uber running while you were running SS?

Nope. I made sure I'd exited out prior to installing/launching SS.

When I first signed up for the SS trial, about the best twitter app out there was twitterberry, and everyone was ranting about how amazing SS was going to be. I think that was 2-3mos ago. Now that Uber is out, SS has more competition.

I'm always looking for the best app for a given situation and am not "married" to Uber. If I could delete 2 apps and replace them w. one that has minimal memory/battery drain, I'd definitely jump at it.

Completely understandable. Sorry to ask a ton of questions, but when did you download it, was it recently? Also, I always had great luck with Uber, but I enjoy some more of the features that SS offers. Have you signed up for the Tweeteev beta, and the new TweetGenius with BeeJive integration?

Downloaded it last night.

I haven't tried the others b/c I've been so pleased w. Uber, particularly on the memory/battery side. I can run it all day (30min update), and by 10pm, still have 45-50% battery and 30+mb memory.

Fair enough. I am not to familiar with the performance of SS on the Storm, being as that I have a tour. But honestly these apps are definitely down to personal preference and there is nothing that makes your choice in this wrong.
