No - apps will only affect the battery life if they are left running.

My best tips for PlayBook battery life:

1 - Don't have Wifi or Bluetooth on if you don't need them
2 - Set a short Screen Timeout time
3 - Turn off Wifi file sharing
4 - Don't use email accounts if you can do without them (I just use BB Bridge anyway).

But, even with Wifi and Bluetooth left on - I only lose about 8% in 10 hours. The PlayBook has become very efficient with its battery since it was first released. Those QNX guys have done a great job.
