Thread: Discuss Google Sync Discontinuing Service With BlackBerry

This is a sad announcement to everyone. As stated by Google, they are going to discontinue their support for Google Sync for BlackBerry app starting June 1, 2012. This is said to be part of their "Spring-cleaning stuff" which I must say is out of season and also not the first time they have stopped supporting the BlackBerry OS. Last year they ended their support for Gmail app.

Below is their statement:

Beginning June 1, 2012, we’re ending our support for Google Sync for BlackBerry. If you already have the app installed, you’ll still be able to use it; however it will not be available for download after June 1. If you currently use Google Sync for BlackBerry, we encourage you to switch to BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) or the Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server going forward. These alternatives offer a better overall experience, as you can sync your email messages, calendar and contacts through a single service.

Why they are doing this? You might want to check their blog for more information, but for me, this is a total inconvenience as most of us users utilize this, especially with their calendars. I myself use this in my job and personal matters. As they have mentioned it, all users who have this app installed on their devices will still be able to use it, but the sad part is that new users will no longer experience the convenience of having this app. I guess it is too late now to speak out and tell Google not to do it. We have no other option but to accept the changes as it is, so I think we all have to move on. Share what you think about this matter in the comments below!

Is it because Google is so deeply involved in the Android market that RIM isn't enough business to make a good profit?
reading about rumored Android type access coming to RIM is obviously just that, rumors. It's too bad that Google looks to the profits so heavily, leaving customer service to someone else.

This application has been a great help to many BlackBerry users who rely on it to sync their calender(s), some users even has multiple calendars, which has helped them immensely.

There are other alternatives to Google Sync for BlackBerry, such as BIS, which may provide a better sync solution for the BlackBerry platform, plus with BB10 arriving later this year, we probably won't even need Google Sync by then.

I wonder what will happen to Google Sync users when they wipe their BlackBerry devices after June 1, 2012, I doubt they will be able to re-install this, since it won't be supported anymore.

I guess we'll see what happens in the near future.

i recently just found out about this the hard way, after applying v7.0 bundle 2355 software update on my curve 9360.

so far, the closest alternative i found that worked is astrasync, which only runs 7 days trial.

would anyone know a substitute free tool for google sync on blackberry?

Anyone who wanted Google Sync, as the app, should have saved the .cod files so they could install it via BBSAK anytime after a wipe.

Also, BIS is an excellent solution for those of you with a data plan. I'm able to sync calendar, contacts, and of course get push email with Google services without the need for an app. On my PlayBook, same thing applies, all my data is synced and any changes I make on the PlayBook are made on the computer, and are made on my phone.

The Google Sync app was only useful if you DON'T have a full data plan, if you do have a data plan, it didn't really provide much benefit. As for Google, well technically they could have kept the app active, just in one of their archives but possibly now they're assuming that the app isn't getting much use as people are using BIS to connect to their Google Services natively.

By using the email setup wizard, you can eliminate the need for the Google sync app since BIS duplicates the funcionality anyway.

Well, with BIS if i delete an entry in the calendar from the web, would it delete also on my phone. Right now, If i use my gmail account with BIS and I delete an email from google, it will not delete it on my phone.

1. On the Home screen, click the Messages icon.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Options.
4. Click Email Reconciliation.
5. If necessary, change the Message Services field.
6. Set "Delete on" to Mailbox and Handheld
7. Press the Menu key.
8. Click Save.

Also, the Calendar is a two way sync, what happens on your device will sync to your Google account, and vice versa.

Yes, I do have that setup this way. But when i delete from my hotmail account on the web interface of my PC, it does not delete on my phone. I guess, i may have to force the reconciliation then.
