Waze is a new kind of social networking app that allows drivers to build roads that haven't yet been "paved" on the app's map system, as well as use live (and most importantly: current) maps as well. The app enables users the opportunity to check real time traffic updates that other Waze users have posted while driving and even use GPS navigation! One thing I really like is that you get points for driving, paving roads, and even hitting little icons on the map for bonus points. The app supports all BlackBerry devices over 8900.
In all honesty, this app has a lot of problems. In Waze's defense, the BlackBerry application is still in their own version of a beta zone, and they're working to fix out the kinks. That's why I decided to give it a try, and to send them feedback on what works for me, and what crashes my poor phone. They even give the disclaimer on the BlackBerry download page that because it is only a beta version, it doesn't quite have all the perks and features other smartphones currently have. You can email the developers at email@example.com
to send feedback.
Besides the points system that really gets my competitive side going, the traffic reports are also really helpful. Users can post construction, slow traffic, and even police sightings. Before heading out in the morning, I can hop into my pickup truck, pull up Waze, and find the best route to my destination. One glitch that really gets me mad because I have to restart my phone to get the app to close, is checking out the Groups section. I wouldn't recommend clicking that until the issue is sorted out, and it's not really necessary to use anyways. Paving roads, using the navigation system, and gaining those lovely points are all possible to do, and that's good enough for me (for now).
I sincerely hope that more BlackBerry users go out and download this app after reading this. I'd like to see Waze transformed to the full potential that I know it's capable of becoming. In all honesty, my dad uses the Waze for iPhone app and it's pretty awesome. I'm confident that the Waze for BlackBerry app could exceed all other smartphones apps, including iPhone. Plus I'd really like the full features soon!
