Updated imo.im v1.1.1 still can't make it into App World

There are many instant messaging apps that cross platforms and allow the user to access a multitude of accounts on their device. Imo.im is one of the few that can do this task in a simple, clean, yet efficient way. It allows you to stay connected with anyone over AIM, Facebook, Google Talk, Skype, MySpace, ICQ, Yahoo and other messaging clients. All your friends are grouped into one convenient section which makes communicating with them very easy. These are just a couple of the cool features of imo and you can check out the rest at their site imo.im/blackberry.

This morning, we received word their beta app for BlackBerry has received an update to version 1.1.1. With it come a couple of new features as well.
    • Morse code
      • No need to look at your phone during meetings, dinner; etc. Leave your phone in your pocket and know who messages you.
      • Set "Morse Code" option to send the first three letters of the person's name, full name or full name and message (that's a lot of vibrations).
    • Sleep scheduling
      • Set your sleep schedule so you don't have to worry about logging off to not be disturbed with message notifications.
This app is definitely a cool one and it gives other IM clients a run for their money. Unfortunately though, while the app is solid you will not be able to find it in App World right now. Why is this the case? Well that's one of the big questions that remains. Why won't RIM approve imo into App World?

Many, including myself, have criticized different aspects of App World and how it handles relations with developers. Imo is a perfect example of this unfortunately. They submitted imo for App World approval back in August of this year (over 3 months ago) and have resubmitted all information asked since then and RIM has stayed silent.

This actually might not come as a surprise for many that remember the fact that IM+ couldn't make its way to the PlayBook. After a lot of frustration, a little over two weeks ago, it was finally approved and launched in App World. It seems the same issue is happening with imo.

It may well just be that RIM wants less competition for BBM, which to me makes no sense in this case. It could be a lack of interest in pushing certain apps, or it could just be incompetence on the part of the people responsible for App World approval. In the end though, all the BlackBerry users that are hungry for apps and IM clients are the ones that pay the price when well constructed apps, like imo, are left out of the App World party.

We go through this just about every time a developer try's to create an app that utilizes cross platform messaging.

I don't get it, RIM is not in a position right now where they can afford to snub apps.

I think it's a little of all of the above.
