Mobile Ventures has just released a new mobile IRC client, Chatmosphere, which allows you to chat in over 100,000 chat rooms around the world. While it's not a full blown IRC client, because it has to proxy the connection, it's a step in the right direction to getting a full client on the Berry. With a full two week trial, you should have plenty of time to decide if its right for you.

This app requires Blackberry OS5+. You can check your version of OS in settings -> about. It is the third line from the top. If you have a handset that supports OS5 but you are still running OS4, have a go at upgrading your phone with desktop manager.
