Thread: Shoot It! and MyGlobalTalk at WES 2010

While at WES 2010 I had the chance to meet and speak with David Schafer, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales at Geos Communications. He showed me two of their applications, Shoot It! and MyGlobalTalk, which are both available in App World.

My apologies for the poor lighting in the video. The area on the showroom floor where the Geos Communications display was located did not have the best lighting.

Shoot It! is an application that allows you to easily create picture postcards simply by taking a picture from your BlackBerry. After you take your picture you then select a recipient's mailing address from your contacts and enter a customized message. This information is then uploaded to the Shoot It! system and within a day a high quality color photo postcard is printed and mailed to the designated recipient.

Shoot It! is simple, to the point and just works. From the sample postcard David had on hand I can attest to the quality of the print. Frankly, I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this idea first.

The Shoot It! application itself is free and the printing and postage price for the postcards depends on the recipient's address. The Shoot It! pricing structure is based on the idea of postcard credits. Each credit costs $0.99 US and are available for purchase in the following quantities:

• 1 postcard credit for $0.99 US
• 10 postcard credits with 2 free (12 credits total) for $9.90 US
• 20 postcard credits with 5 free (25 credits total) for $19.80 US
• 50 postcard credits with 15 free (65 credits total) for $49.50 US

When you send Shoot It! postcards the credits are used as follows:

• Postcards to United States addresses cost 1 credit.
• Postcards to other North America countries and the United Kingdom cost 1.25 credits.
• Postcards to Western Europe cost 1.50 credits.

The second application David showed is MyGlobalTalk. The MyGlobalTalk application and service allows you to make international calls by calling a local switch which then routes the call over a VOIP connection to the international destination. What makes MyGlobalTalk so simple is that the application detects when you are starting to make an international call from your BlackBerry. It then stops the call and dials their domestic switch for VOIP routing. The beauty of this is that it means the user does not have to memorize or manually dial the MyGlobalTalk switch numbers.

When demonstrating MyGlobalTalk for me David made a call to London, UK. Normally the call would have cost $0.15 to $0.20 per minute but by using the MyGlobalTalk switch and service the call was only $0.02 per minute. David stated that users can save up to 60% on international calls.

MyGlobalTalks key features include:

• Local switch numbers for 61 countries.
• Supports calling land lines and mobile numbers.
• Offers corporate and personal plans.

Wow! As Robin said, innovative!
Look forward to using this over the summer for the kids to send cards home from camp and vacation to the older family members who are not online.

On top of being innovative, Geos Communications is also giving back. Before we recorded the interview David told me Geos Communications has partnered with other companies and the USO to provide Shoot It! credits and MyGlobalTalk minutes to military men and women and their families. It is absolutely refreshing to see apps that actually provide a useful service to the user.
