These applications claiming to offer "free SMS" pop up all the time. Well, here is another one - however this one is just a bit different. It replicates BlackBerry Messenger, but it's for both BlackBerry and iPhone. Now, I know not many of us care for iPhones (The reason we sleep with our BlackBerry's, right?) but that doesn't mean relatives, friends or associates/colleagues don't. Kik provides a great missing link between the two such as BlackBerry Messenger does between BlackBerry's.
The way the application works is very unique. First off, before I explain the process, Kik to Kik messages are 100% free - no strings attached. Kik to SMS require credits (first 50 are free). Their credits are VERY cheap, 1000 credits for $4.99. Now, Kik assigns each user a unique number. This allows people who don't have Kik to SMS a user who does have Kik, like a normal SMS. Now I hear people requesting left and right a BlackBerry Messenger application for the iPhone. I also know many BlackBerry addicts take pride in having a unique messaging application. However this just might fill in that long awaited void and offer a peace between the two.
I am less concerned about the free SMS portion as the rule applies, if you have a BlackBerry, odds are you have unlimited SMS. What I am more interested in is if BlackBerry and iPhone users will find a median and both go 3rd party instead of trying to integrate 1st party into each device. So I'm just curious for those of you iPhone/BlackBerry 50/50 (Spouses, Business/Personal, etc...) users out there are going to try it on for size? Is it something worth even considering trying out?
