Thread: Google Maps Updated to 4.0.1 - Includes Search By Voice

The BlackBerry edition of Google Maps has been officially updated to v4.0.1 today. One of the added features packaged with this new is a "Buzz" layer. As with Traffic, this additional layer can be toggled on or off at the users discretion from the map screen options. Personally, I have found very little use for Buzz, but the dramatic increase in version from 3.2.1 to 4.0.1 hopefully indicates that additional fixes and features are here or on the way.

New in 4.0.1 is Search By Voice, Starred Items Sync, Search Suggestions (based on your search history).

I haven't been able to get "search by voice" to work on my 9550. Locks up the app. Checked the help section from my BB and it mentions "search by voice" was for Android.

If you click here Google Maps for mobile and scroll down to supported phones you're going to see that the NEW features of this updated version are for the 'Droid and NOT the BlackBerry.

I tried to do my own address, and it would only take the numbers. I then tried to say the numbers and add a space then respeak the street, and it searched something entirely different. Havent seen the lock up issue, but its definitely not working right on my 9550 also.

It also doesn't show that the Starred Items are supported by the berry either Orio. However when you install the app it tells you that google search by voice and starred items are a new feature. Maybe they just haven't updated the site with the new features? I shrunk out voice activation from my phone so I haven't been able to test the search feature on my 9550. Will add it back on now and let you know my findings.

My voice search works perfectly. 9700 here

It also works for the Storm 1...tried it on my son's...

From what I've gathered...it's not working on the Storm2 running 5.0.0.607

...of course I have a Storm2 running 5.0.0.607 :no::no: Locks my app up !!

Hopefully Google finds a fix for this soon.

You shrunk out Voice activated dialing...I also shrunk that out but I can use Voice on Google Mobile, and VLingo. Try the Voice Search...and see if the app locks. All ya gotta do if it does is a battery pull

I believe its an OS issue...my opinion, anyway..:crazy:

lol surprised the voice search worked, and my street name is kind of a weird name too

wow im extremely surprised at how well the voice search works.....3 for 3 on the voice search

Voice search works just fine on my 8320 running OS 4.5. That's gotta piss off anyone with a Storm 2.

I bet Google doesn't fix it for the 5.0.0.607.
There are several 3rd Party Apps that aren't working with this build.

I have the storm2...everything works fine....the voice the mymaps the starred items....everything...make sure you login to maps.

Interesting I assumed that since I shrunk that out it wouldn't work. When trying the voice search it doesn't freeze my app I just get this image. But I really don't have to restart the app it works just fine besides the fact that I can't voice search lol..

EDIT: So for the Heck of it I wiped my device and re shrunk the OS this time I did not shrink out voice activated dialing or voice notes (whether that means anything or not I do not know). I just installed the Gmaps app and long and behold my voice search is working and it's awesome how well it works. So to answer everyone's question it's not a .607 OS issue

I think I figured this out...at least for my BB. If I open google maps...and looking at the map screen, I hold down the green phone button...Search by Voice works fine...but if I first click the BB button, then click Search Maps, and hold down the green phone button...it won't work or allow me to exit app, thus a battery pull. But it does work...just need to utilize it from the map screen.

Just tried using the search maps method and you are correct app freezes for me as well. I am able to navigate away from the app and my phone functions fine but I can't close the app in the background. Battery Pull :no:

My voice search is working good, but I cannot pan around like I could on the older version. I tried the compatibility mode, and it gives me the keyboard view and half the screen, but I still cannot hit anything my using the touch screen on my phone.

Anyone else run into this? I have done about 965526987 battery pulls and it is still doing it.

ANy recommendations??? It is kind of annoying.

Besides not being able to click any prompts or have any interaction on the screen, it seeems to work pretty well. mfg:
