I have this app and its great. It really does do what it says BUT (and this is a REALLY BIG BUT) isnt this exactly what RIM will be releasing in its new package of Blackberry Shield? So this company is about to go out of business but still want 100 bucks of your money?

just pointing it out... And yes, fair enough, you can NOT take Blackberry Shield over to an Android.

Just a thought along with that. If Blackberry Shield has half the issues of every other blackberry application does at its release do you really want to rely solely on it? Not to say it wont be fixed and take the place of smart guard in the future, but we have seen some pretty scary stuff come out of the gates at RIM

While I don't have first hand knowledge of what the BlackBerry service will entail, I do recall seeing a video at the RIM developer conference a few months back with the SMRTGUARD president talking about their service.

Of course, nothing was confirmed, but my expectation is that there may be some sort of partnership between RIM & SMRTGUARD. Whether or not this will be a carbon copy, re-branded offering or something else entirely, I have not seen any mention that the RIM version will be a free service. Did you? It just seems unlikely that they would take on this kind of project and offer it to all BB users at no charge.

I'm currently using the PRO version of SmrtGuard and it seems to work well. I've not yet had to restore or migrate cross platform but it does help me sleep a little easier. Especially after I accidentally wiped my contacts & calendar on Outlook, BB, & Google a few weeks ago.

Yes I saw that or I wouldnt have said free.

Very possible that I am mistaken. For some reason I was under the impression that it was going to be tiered ala SmrtGuard. Will see if I can dig up the info I saw on it last.

I did some additional searching and didn't come across the information I recall reading previously but it does appear that the speculation is that more official information should be coming out this month and that there will likely be a free version and a paid version.

If this is a RIM re-branded version of SmrtGuard I wonder if it's something that they will push billing through on the carrier level. This also begs the question of how much more (or less) various carriers will charge and if it will offer improved features over the native SmrtGuard.

Not to point fingers, but if carriers are the ones handling the billing then I don't envy those on big red. BIS-X anyone?

In that case we should all create the biggest corporate account include everyone in BBOS, make savings on the plans and use BESX
